"Marriage Bonds of Henrico County, Virginia, 1782-1853" [from ?] In Richmond, Feb. 10, 1795, John Carter to Matilda Wray, with the consent of her father, James Wray; William Hawkins, surety, William Carter, Sr., witness.

Dr. John Carter and his wife Anna Matilda Wray came to Augusta, Georgia sometime between October 1805 and January 1808 as their daughter Anna Matilda Carter was born in Richmond, Virginia in October 1805 and their next child Elizabeth was born in Augusta,Georgia January 1808.

ANNA MATILDA CARTER'S WILL

It begin the design of Providence that all men shall die and not knowing when my summons may arrive it is my desire to bequeath the little property I possess to dear friends who I hope may live to enjoy it. Hence I bequeath Sally alias Salina a young Mulatto woman about 20 years of age with all of offspring that nature may see fit to bestow upon her to my dear Grandson Thomas Michell Carter as his sole individual property but should it become necessary to the comfort of the parties that she has to change her master I request that the proceeds of her value be invested in such a manner as to insure to the said Thomas Michell a regular income. To my Eldest Grandson James Henry Carter I leave a half dozen Silver tablespoons with the letter C engraved on each beneath the representation of a sheaf of wheat. To Mrs. Anna M. Robinson the same number of tablespoons similarly figured & engraved. To my Granddaughter Matilda Carter I give a half dozen teaspoons exactly corresponding with the described except in size and the half dozen teaspoons exactly like the last to my Granddaughter Jane McKenzie Carter. And to Eliza Carter I bequeath a Breast Pin containing her Father's hair. To my Granddaughter Nancy Carter I leave my Bedstead feather bed, cotton mattress Bolster & two pairs of pillows and the curtains belonging to the establishment. To my son Robert I leave my Chest of drawers in consideration of their having been used first by his father and lastly by myself. To my dear little Robert Elliott Carter I leave my washstand to serve him as for a book case, and a Breast Pin containing my own hair. And to John Barrett Carter, Flournoy Carter, and Cary Carter I leave a Breast Pin a piece containing the hair of the donor. To my beloved daughter Anna M. Nelson I give the likeness of her father. Also the daguerreotype likeness of her brothers Charles & Nelson and that of Martha Hannah Carter & also my spectacles. And to Evelyn Carter the Brass and Irons that have stood in my room. To Salina I have promised my Bible when it shall please the Director of all events to remove me. The rings that I wear in my ears I have given to her when they are discarded from my own use. When my Wardrobe is inspected I wish the servants to have remembrances of me particularly Salina for such things as would not serve a lady would be acceptable to her. To which I place my signature this 26th day of September 1847.
