The pleadings in this suit disclosed that Cleeve was a Somersetshire man, that he had lived in Bristol and London and that his mother was still living in 1618...on 18 March 1591/2 one Anna Cary alias Cleeves, widow, married John Cross of Stogursey. Here were his likely parents. Whether Cary was her maiden name, or if a Cary husband intervened between Cleeve and Cross is not known.
