Anne Washington Wright is buried at George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Virginia, at Bridges Creek Washington Family Cemetery. Dates are listed as 1660 - March 1697, Anne was the daughter of Colonel John Washington and Anne Pope. Anne married Major Francis Wright about 1682. We know she had one son, John Wright Sr. born about Aug. 1684, and she was quiet young when she died in 1697. Anne's brother, Major Lawrence Washington, was Grandfather to George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. Anne's younger brother, Captain John Washington, died just one year after her death. Anne's Grandfather, Nathaniel Pope, was a well seated land owner in Westmoreland County, Va. and when her parents were married he gave them 700 acres of land on Mattox Creek for a wedding gift. Mattox Creek is just minutes from George Washington's birthplace. This is the first land the Washington family owned in Virginia. Anne's father, Colonel John Washington, became land rich in Virginia, thru the use of headrights and investments and amassed his holding to 5,000 acres, and this was for a man in his late 30's. His largest single purchase was in 1674 at Hunting Creek across the Potomac River in Maryland. This land would have everlasting fame as the location for Mount Vernon.
