Ann Edwards Folley's origins have yet to be researched. She claimed to have been born in the 1830s at Mile End, in the East End of London, and to be the daughter of a John Folley. Her first confirmed sighting is in 1855, when she married Mark Jones at St Mary's Church at Lambeth. They then moved to St Luke's, on the northern edge of the City of London. They had a son, Edmund Edwards Jones, born in 1860. The family appears in the 1861 census living at 4 Seward Street in St Luke's. Mark was working as a watch glass maker, whilst Ann was an umbrella maker.
Some time between 1861 and 1869, Mark Jones seemingly disappears. Ann remarried in 1869, but remarried in her maiden name and claimed to be a spinster. This perhaps suggests that Mark Jones was still alive and Ann knew it. Ann's second husband was Charles William Dexter. Ann's son Edmund took the surname Dexter and used it for the rest of his life. The 1871 census finds Ann at 11 Lizard Street in St Luke's, still working as an umbrella maker. Charles was a cricket leg guard maker. Charles died in 1874, aged just 39.
Ann's son Edmund moved out of London to Luton in Bedfordshire. She spent some time living there with him, appearing there with him and his family in the 1891 census. Ann has yet to be traced after 1891.
