I don't know much about my greatgrandmother, Angele Marie Stinders. She was born on September 30, 1894 in Vlissingen, Zeeland, the Netherlands, to Belgian parents from Oostend. Her father, Augustus Ludovicus Stinders, worked as a pilot guiding ships into the port of Antwerp. Ever since the separation of Belgium from the Netherlands in 1830, a group of Oostend pilots had been resident in Vlissingen in order to pilot ships into the port of Antwerp.

Angele married Hermanus Wilhelm Schröder, born in London as the son of a German father and a Dutch mother and therefore stateless, on November 29, 1917 in Vlissingen. They had one child, Angela Johanna Schröder (my grandmother), who was born in 1919 in Vlissingen. Soon thereafter, the family moved away from Vlissingen, settling in Amsterdam after a short spell in Dordrecht. Hermanus worked as a waiter.

Angele Marie Stinders passed away in Amsterdam on the 27th of February 1935 as the result of uterine cancer, leaving behind her husband and a 16 year old daugher.
