  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 BIOGRAPHY: Andrew John Jordan, according to family stories, came from Scotland to the United States in the 1700s and settled in the area of Monterey, Virginia. The Census Report of 1860, however, lists Andy and Catherine as both having been born in Pendleton County.

Andy has been described as tall and lean and particularly wiry. His descendants proudly relate an episode which took place when Andy was a young man. He was, reportedly, a skillful fist fighter and loved to indulge in the sport. He would travel for miles in the quest of challengers and he usually won. Once he was challenged to fight a man in Northern Virginia. Andy accepted the challenge and traveled by foot to his rival's locale. There he quickly outperformed his opponent. On his way home he stopped at a store. He became interested in a coffee pot which was on the top shelf some ten to twelve feet above floor level. After some discussion, the merchant told Andy he could have the pot if he could kick it off the shelf. Andy, not only kicked the pot off the shelf, but caught it in his hands as it fell toward the floor! Grandpa George Jordan used to love to tell this story.

We understand that Andy frequently sprinkled his language with profanity. Each and every time he did, though, he would say, "God, forgive me."

Some of the Jordan's insist that Andy was a first cousin to Andrew Jackson. This, however, has never been substantiated.

As of the summer of 1999, their headstone, located at Fenton Cemetery, Fenton, Illinois, is very difficult to read as the lettering is just about gone from it. A rub of the headstone will produce some information.
