Andrew Johnson was born Anders Johansen in Bergen, Norway in 1854 to Johan Johnsen, a Mariner and Berith Andersdr. His father is listed on his marriage certificate as John Johnsen, and his mothers name is difficult to read and it looks like Alberth Anderson.

When Andrew was 23 he arrived in Australia as a crew member on board an English ship called the The Lady Belhaven which departed from London and arrived in Sydney on the 8th June 1877. At this time his name is recorded as Andrew Johansen. The crew members were predominately British with others being from Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

Andrew later changed his surname by deed poll from the Norwegian Johansen, to the Anglicised version of Johnson. He remained working with boats throughout his life as the occupation on his marriage certificate in 1854 and then his son, Henry's marriage certificate in 1904 list his occupation as a Mariner. His own death certificate lists his occupation as a wharf labourer.

On the 9th of September 1882, Andrew Johnson married Kate (Catherine) Price at Bethel House, George St, Sydney.

It appears that Andrew may have had a brother or other relative in Australia, or possibly he was friends with a fellow Norwegian with a similar surname because witnesses on Andrew and Kate's marriage certificate are Lars and Elizabeth Johnson.

Andrew died on 4th November 1912 at 397 Pyrmont St, Sydney, NSW from a Cerebral Haemorrhage.
