Rockbridge County, VA Chancery Records - Index #: 1841-021 - Original Case #: 9.35
Admr. of Andrew Hall, Plaintiff, vs. Thomas McCluer, Etc., Defendants
This case deals with the division and sale of slaves of the McCluer family, which family Andrew married into. In this court record it states in a couple of places that Andrew & his wife, Isabella McCluer Hall, "went west".
Taken from the 168 page document:
page 28-
"James Taylor says in 1828 that Andrew Hall Returned to this County on a visit." Supposedly Hall wanted the slaves sold or wanted his portion, in cash, of what the slaves were worth - stating that money would be of more use to him "out west" than the slaves. (James Taylor was Andrew Hall's brother in law - both men marrying McCluer/McClure sisters)
page 163 of this document is a Summons for various people dealing with this case. The names listed in this summons appear (although not confirmed by me) that at least some of them may be the children of Andrew & Isabella McCluer Hall. The names, in the document, are as follows: Thomas McCluer, James Taylor & Katharine his wife, Isabella Hall, widow of Andrew Hall, Decd., Andrew Hall, John Hall, Catharine Hall, Resin Elliott & Mary Ann his wife, formerly Hall, James Kincaid & Nancy his wife, formerly Hall, James Hall, Thomas Hall & Isabella Hall. (Thomas McCluer was Andrew Hall's brother in law, he being the brother of Isabella McCluer Hall. James Taylor & wife Catharine were also in-laws of Andrew Hall, Catharine being his wife's sister. There were also 2 other brothers of Isabella McCluer Hall, Moses and John)
This summons was made on 10-20-1837, several years after Andrew Hall died Intestate, so it's possible that these Hall names in this document would be his heirs.
According to a Rockbridge Co., VA Chancery document Admr. of Andrew Hall, Plaintiff, vs. Thomas McCluer, etc. Defendant (1841-015/8.34): Alexander Mc. Hall was a resident of Kentucky and the son & administrator of his father Andrew's intestate. This document does not state where Andrew died, but Alexander obtained, in 1837, letters of Administration for his father's estate, from the Rockbridge Co., VA Court, which states Andrew died intestate in the year 1832. From what I glean from this record is that Andrew more than likely died "out west", possibly in Kentucky, as in later court documents (1839-1841) dealing with this same case it is stated that Isabella is "out of the country". I would suppose "country" would mean out of the state of Virginia, as Isabella does not appear before the court when summoned.
