Sometime after Jacob Stansell left for Colorado, Amelia moved back to Michigan and lived with her parents.

In the 1880 census she is recorded as a widow; however her former husband Jacob was recorded living in Colorado. It was common for divorced women to declare themselves as widows to census enumerators, to avoid the stigma associated with divorce.
