Identity

Amanda Chandler is found in the 1850 Census in Sterling Mass, age 17, in the household of Norman & Eliza Chandler. Eliza being Norman's second wife. Her marriage record indicates she was born in Vermont and identifies her father as Charles Chandler, while her death record lists Norman Chandler. Donovan in History of Lyndeborough, does not mention her parents. In the History of Princeton (Mass), there is a Charles Chandler, who married Sarah Nichols, and had one child, Sarah Eliza Chandler (d. Charles and Sarah Eliza, b. 20 Sep 1843, VR of Princeton). That Sarah, age 7, was residing with Charles in Princeton in 1850. Amanda Chandler's birth record has not yet been found and she is most commonly listed as having been born in Vermont, although, Massachusetts also appears. In the Nash Family, we find Norman Chandler, marrying Hannah Warren, and "settled in Fairfield, Vt." and that his second wife was "Mrs. Eliza Sharron" who with her two children (Mary A & Stephen S. Sharon) appear with Amanda in the 1850 Census.

From this, we can conclude that the marriage record is flawed whether by error or obfuscation is not known. Further, Charles Chandler is not the father of Amanda, rather she was born to Norman B Chandler and Hannah Warren, possibly in Fairfield, Vt.
