age 5 on 1850 Census, Missouri Aras Polk Stephens was drug out of his home in the middle of the night and murdered by Duke Sumner. Polk Stephens. He lived near the present town of Mountain Grove, Mo. He rode with Duke Sumner's Confederate guerrillas and was killed by Sumner in 1862. Duke Sumner Died 1877 in Randolph Co. Ark. He served in the Osage Regiment of Home Guards with his father, Issac, on July 1, 1861 to Dec. 6, 1861 under Capt. J. D. Hurst at Linn Creek, Camden Co. Mo. later serving in the Mo. State Guard in the first year of the war and returned home to get caught up in the confusion and desperation of the conflict, forming a gang of about 50 men and riding the countryside. Among his guerillas were Henry Eaton, Dock Wright, William Malony, Bill Cannefax and Bill Rippee. They attacked James Spark's house, and fired at the owner. He was a Union soldier. In 1862 Duke killed his pal, Polk Stephens, who had grown tired of chasing around the area, and gotten interested in a girl whom they both loved. Duke moved South to Randolph Co.
