Except from "A Personal History of the Hill and Burnham Families of Cassadaga, New York", loose leaf family stories written by Esther England, 1979.

Alvin HILL met Agnes HILL in Saltfleets, Ontario, Canada, when he was on a trip to find more customers for the cheese factory that he worked at in Burnhams Hollow, Arkwright Township, Chautauqua County, New York. His boss, Ashel Burnham had sent Alvin and another young man, Charles Black, through the western edge of New York and into Ontario looking for customers for the large rounds of cheese that he made. Alvin HILL married Agnes HILL 23 October 1873 in the family home of her parents, James and Sarah HILL, on the banks of Lake Ontario. Alvin's friend, Charles Black, married one of Agnes's sisters, Elizabeth. Alvin and Agnes made their home in Cassadaga where they raised their three children: Alice, Bessie and Charles. Alvin built a big house on High Street with a barn, chicken house, and a three-hole outhouse. Agnes washed the family clothing with collected rain water, made her own soap, and tended their fruit orchard, their house and family. She was always busy with cooking, baking, sewing plus her church activities. Alvin invested in many business ventures including the Cassadaga Cheese Factory, a fruit drying business and Hill's store, both in Cassadaga, and a silver mining business. Some he did well with but the silver mining enterprise was a bust. Alvin was also Deputy Sheriff of Cassadaga for many years.
