Alta Jane Anderson, only daughter of Emma Rudy and Amos Andrews was born April 22, 1870 near Salem, Marion County, Illinois and passed away at her home near Howard, October 1, 1941 at 8:15 p.m. At the age of seven she came to Kansas with her parents and three brothers in a covered wagon. Her childhood days were spent two miles north of Howard. In 1890 she was united in marriage to Santford Anderson. To this union were born three daughters, one Edith McClure, passed away February 11, 1921. Mrs. Anderson was reared in a truly Christian home and under the teaching of her good Christian mother read the New Testament through three times. At an early age she was converted under the teaching of Rev. Jonny Bays. In 1907 she was united with the Methodist Church of Howard and until her death was a faithful member and enthusiastic worker in her church and Sunday school. She never missed a service when it was possible for her to attend. Her Christian influence and kindly neighborliness will be sadly missed by the entire community. Her earliest recollections were of going with her mother to the bedside of a sick child, or neighbor and continued all her life in that habit formed by her youth. Since her husbands death May 31, 1940, she has continued to live in her own home, where she was lovingly cared for by her two daughters during her short illness. She leaves to mourn her going, two daughters Bertie L. Wisner of Howard and Olive Vice of Wichita; two sons-in-law who were like own sons to her, Leslie B. Wisner and Russell J. Vice; ten grandchildren, one great great granddaughter Kay Arlene Wisner, one brother, Albert Andrew of Howard, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Howard, Kansas, Friday, October 3, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Dr. T. Restin Heath. Interment in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Kansas. _______
All is dark within our dwelling Lonely are our hearts today, For the one we loved so dearly Has forever passed away Live a jewel shining brightly In her place she'll watch and wait; And will welcome us so gladly, When we reach the golden gate. _______ What matters when you join the fold If your name is called when young or old? In looking back, I think you'll find What counts is what you leave behind. Not riches, jewel, not your wealth. Not even pain. Not robust health. So many leave all these and more When passing to that other shore. The only legacy that death defies. Is love. That lives. That never dies. So give your life, spend all your years In shedding joy, give smiles, not tears; Then when death claims it's time to sever, You'll live in loving hearts forever.
CARD OF APPRECIATION and thanks to mother's dear neighbors and friends. We only say "God bless you" and may you have such loyal friends when your sad hour and trials come. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Wisner and family, Mr. and Mrs. Russell J. Vice and family, Robert A. McClure.
Alta Jane was a petite redhead, energetic, well organized and meticulous.
