The Will of Alice (Reynolds) (Roper) (Dickinson) Allen
"Her son, Ephraim Roper, presented the account. In the will she mentioned her daughter, "Ruth hains"; grand-daughter "Sary Adhams"; "Thomas Adham's wife and Samuel Adhams my two grandchildren"; "grandson Goodhew"; "those three of my children that are deceased and left children"; "the part which should be to my daughter [Courrer's?] children, to my grand-daughter Goodhew's child which she had by John." An "Alce Makamb" is mentioned, who apparently could not have been a daughter. Benjamin Allen and Rachel Allen were witnesses.
Savage states that John(2) Roper of Dedham came in 1637, aged 26, with wife Alice, 23, and two children, Alice and Elizabeth. At D. they had Rachel, b. 1640, d. 1641; Hannah, b. 1642; Ephraim and Benjamin (or Nathaniel), twins, b. 1645. From the will it appears that she also had a dau. Ruth who m. ----- Haynes; that a dau. m. -----[Courrers?]; and that either a dau. or a granddau. m. ----- Goodhue. Thomas Adams of Charlestown m. [Wyman's Charlestown] adds Thomas, Rebecca, b. 1667; and Mary, b. 1684; omits Edith, with mar. 1656."[2]

The authors review the research published by Lyman Mower and Ella E Roper and note that they and Robert Charles Anderson find them unreliable. They state unequivocally that that the elder John Roper in their books was not only not the father of this John Roper but he did not exist! The immigrant was the John Roper who married Alice Reynolds. John Roper and Alice Reynolds were married 3 Oct 1633 in New Buckingham, Norfolk, England [parish records for New Buckingham]. The records include the baptism of 2 of their daughters: Alice 10 Sep 1634 and Elizabeth 25 Jan 1635/6. They include a deposition where John Roper states his desire to immigrate to New England dated 13 Apr 1637. He was named in the will of Simon Reynolds, etc. Alice Reynolds born say 1609 in New Buckenham, Norfolk, England daughter of Simon and Alice Reynolds married first 3 Oct 1633 New Buckenham, Norfolk, England to John1 Rober, married second 14 Apr 1681 John Dickinson who died 30 Dec 1683 and married three to William Allen of Salisbury who died 18 Jun 1686.
