    25 Feb 1897, p 2 - Hon. James Brown, one of the oldest members of the Henry county bar, died suddenly Monday, at his home in New Castle while dictating a brief to his daughter, who was his stenographer. Mr. Brown was born in Henry county, near Spiceland, iin 1828. About 1850 he came to this county, and taught two terms of school in what was then known as the Bruce school house, south of Pennville. He boarded with Wm. Carpenter, in that neighborhood, fell in love with his daughter, Alice, and married her. She proved an amiable companion, and together they made a success of life. ... Mrs. Harriet Carpenter and daughter, Emma, were called to New Castle, Monday, by the death of Judge Brown.

    12 Aug 1897, p 2 - The widow of the late Jas. Brown, a prominent attorney, died at her home in New Castle, Tuesday. She was a native of this county. It was when Mr. Brown was teaching school south of Pennville, that he met his life companion while boarding at the home of her father, Wm. Carpenter.
