    Baptisms / 1809 / Septem[be]r / 24. Baptized Alfred, Son of William & Sarah Snelling, born July 5th

There were two Alfred Snellings born at Crawley around this time - this one baptised in 1809 and his nephew (his sister Sarah's son) baptised in 1812. In the later censuses both Alfreds gave ages suggesting that they were born around 1812/13. One married Ann Sayers at Ifield in 1834 and the other married Mary Bowers at Crawley in 1837. The Alfred baptised in 1809 has been linked to the man who married Ann Sayers on the basis that one of the witnesses to their marriage was Louisa Moore, who was the older sister of the Alfred baptised in 1809.

The St George Hanover Square Registration District included three sub-districts: Hanover Square, Mayfair and Belgrave. The 1861 census returns for the Belgrave sub-district are apparently lost, and that is the area where this family is known to have lived both before and after that census. This is therefore the most likely explanation as to why they have not been found in this census.
