News Item A.G. PORTER IS KILLED IN ODD ACCIDENT Run-away Motorcycle Brings Death to Former Spring Lake Resident Near Nunica... Alfred G. Porter, 71 years old, Nunica, route 1, died Sunday afternoon at Municipal hospital from a lung puncture inflicted when his son-in-law, Charles E. Shears, attempting to ride his son's motorcycle, was thrown off and hurled against Porter who was standing on the front porch of the Shears home. Mr. Porter was rushed to the local hospital where he died within a short time. Coroner W.B. Bloemendal was called and pronounced death due to an accident. Charles L. Shears, 23, who is married and lives on a farm near the elder Shears home, had come to his parents' home with a new motorcycle. The father, who had ridden a motorcycle before, was trying out the new model. In some way, it is reported, he placed his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake and the motorcycle headed in the direction of the porch and hit an obstruction which hurled the rider off and threw him onto the porch where the old man was standing. Mrs. Shears, daughter of the deceased, a young son Jack and Minor Berg, of this city who was a guest at the home, were witnesses to the tragic accident. The deceased was a former resident of Spring Lake, where he lived some ten years ago when he operated a gas station. He had previously lived in Crockery township and owned and operated a farm for many years. He had lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Shears for about four years. He was born Aug 2, 1869 in Angola, Ind., but had spent most of his life in Ottawa county where he was well known in this section. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Shears; Mrs. L. Rose, Allegan; Mrs. Leonard Brown, Jackson; and three sons, Loren, Traverse City; Harvey, Muskegon, and Freeman, Otsego; and 19 grandchildren. The body was taken to the Ringold funeral home in Spring Lake where it will remain for funeral services on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Frank Hurley, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate and burial will be in Nunica cemetery. Source: Grand Haven Daily Tribune, Mon., June 9, 1941, pg 3. Image Gallery
