Alfred Lewis was born on 5th December 1906 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Susannah Priscilla Moss and Thomas Lewis, a rag and bone man. Alfred appears in the 1911 census living with his parents and siblings at 29 South Road in Luton. He was the youngest of the couple's eleven children. His eldest brother was already married with children before Alfred was born.

In 1916 Alfred's father died, when Alfred was only nine years old.

In 1931 Alfred married Gladys Laura Baulk, who had been born in Slough, but had grown up in the village of Redbourn, a few miles south of Luton. They married in the St Albans district, which included Redbourn. They had a daughter in 1931, whose birth was registered in the St Albans district, and a son in 1932 whose birth was registered in Luton. It would appear they lived with Alfred's mother and siblings in Luton for a while early in their marriage, appearing in both the 1932 and 1933 electoral registers at 29 South Road in Luton.

Some time between 1933 and 1939 they left Luton and moved to Bletchely in Buckinghamshire. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Alfred and Gladys were living at a house called "Alfreda", on Drayton Road in Bletchley (listed after 17 Drayton Road). Alfred was working as a tailor at W.O. Peake's factory and also served as an air raid precautions warden.

Back in Luton, Alfred's mother died in 1950. Alfred was the informant for his mother's death, and he gave his address as 18 Drayton Road, Bletchley.

In 1975 Alfred acted as administrator for the estate of his older brother Harry, who had moved to Harrogate. Harry and his wife had had no children so Alfred was one of the next of kin. At this time, Alfred gave his address as 64 Drayton Road, which may well have been the same house as that previously called Alfreda or 18 Drayton Road, as the 1939 register suggests the road was chronologically numbered at that time, whereas the modern numbers have even numbers on the north side and odd numbers on the south side.

Alfred died in 1986, aged about 80. Gladys survived him by nearly ten years.
