Research Notes

Alfred Johnson or Johnston and his wife Mary Elizabeth Hopping moved from Coles County, Illinois, to Washington County, Iowa, about 1850.

Alfred Johnson was listed in the 1850 federal census of Washington County, Iowa. He was in State of Iowa censuses of Washington County in the early 1850s. He bought federal land in Washington County in 1853. He was listed in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 federal censuses of Washington County.

Alfred resided, for the most part, in Marion township, along with his brother Noel Johnson and Noel's wife Francis (Fanny) Vaughn Johnson, and Alfred's sisters Martha Johnston Powell, wife of Joseph Powell, and Nancy Johnston Donovan, wife of James Donovan. Three of Alfred's four sisters are listed with their spouses in the marriage records of Champaign County, Ohio, and two of them moved later to Washington County, Iowa. Noel was married in Kentucky and he and Frances lived in 1840 and 1850 in Nelson County, Kentucky, near her father, Rev. William Vaughn, a Baptist minister, until about 1852 when they moved to Washington County, Iowa. Noel's middle name or first name was probably Lloyd.

Alfred is said to have run a general store in the town of Eureka, and he was a farmer.

Alfred's wife Mary E. Hopping died about 1864 and he remarried before 1870 to Nancy who is listed as his wife in the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Marion township, Washington County, Iowa.

In the 1895 Iowa State Census, Alfred Johnson, 77, lived at the home of Jeremiah Johnson and Ennon Johnson in Hardin County, Iowa and was described in the census as the father of Jeremiah Johnson (Jerry).
