Alfred Hatherley was baptised on 25th May 1823 at Shebbear in Devon, son of Margaret Hatherley. His baptism record does not name his father, although as an adult he claimed his father was a shoemaker called John Hatherley, although this may have been a fiction to conceal the fact that he was illegitimate. Alfred's baptism records that he lived at Endford Park, which was just south of the village, being listed in the 1842 Tithe Apportionment for Shebbear as a house and three fields on the west side of the road now called Haycross Hill. The house appears to be still there, now called Endfield Cottage.[9] When Alfred was about ten years old, his mother married a John Metters at Walkhampton, about 30 miles south of Shebbear on the edge of Dartmoor. The 1841 census finds Alfred still living in Walkhampton, working as a farm servant at Long Ash.
Alfred was married on 23rd July 1844, aged 21, to Celia Drake. She was from Bere Ferrers, about eight miles west of Walkhampton, although they married in Plymouth. He described himself as a tailor on their marriage certificate, but appears to have spent the rest of his life working in the dockyards around Plymouth and Devonport. They appear to have had three children together. Celia died in Devonport in 1860, aged 43.
Alfred remarried later that year to a Susan Wright, formerly Pulham. They appear together in the 1861 census in Plymouth. By 1871 he was living alone, although still described as married. The 1881 census finds him living with his son Thomas and his family.
Alfred died in 1889 in Plymouth, aged 66.

This baptism has been linked to the Alfred Hatherley who married Celia Drake on the basis that it is in the parish he quoted in the censuses as his birthplace at about the right time for the age he claimed to be. Whilst both Alfred's marriage certificates claim his father was a shoemaker named John Hatherley, there is no corresponding baptism for an Alfred at Shebbear with a father called John. However, one of the witnesses to Alfred's first marriage was a John Bickle Metters, who had married at Shebbear in 1831 to a Dorothy Hatherley, who appears to have been daughter of John and Margaret Hatherley. It therefore seems that Alfred's mother Margaret was either Dorothy's mother or perhaps a sibling of Dorothy whose baptism has not been found.
