The Doctor Who Made It Possible For Pattisons and Stewarts To Leave Scotland for USA

According to matriculation records in 1767 Alexander Stewart would have been 12 but Scots registered several years before they actually went to school. Alexander Stewart received a medical education at Glasgow University. Alexander Stewart filius natu quartus Roberti in oppido de Paisley(English translation: Alexander Stewart by birth the fourth son of Robert in town of Paisley).

Alexander was a surgeon in US Army during the American Revolution. He was commissioned 1 May 1776 to the rank of surgeon, appointed by General Thompson, in Captain Steven Bedlam’s Company of Colonel Knox’s Regiment of Artillery. He was listed on the company’s muster roll ( 8 Dec 1775-29 Dec 1776 ) as being at Mount Independence 29 Nov 1776. He received at Camp Tinnick on 29 Aug 1780 of Lt. William Feltman, Paymaster, 10th Regiment of PA, $1,080 paid on account for pay and subsistence for the months of Jan, Feb, Mar of 1780; this was agreeable to a resolve of Congress of the 10th of March 1780 and was signed by Alexander Stewart, surgeon.

On 17 Jan 1781 he transferred to Third PA. On 1 Jan 1783 he retired or resigned from the army. His military record states that he was a surgeon’s mate, Hospital Dept, Oct 1775-Apr 1776; surgeon of Knox’s Reg. of Continental Artillery 1 May-31 Dec 1776; surgeon for 10th PA 10 Oct 1779 and transferred to 3rd PA 17 Jan 1781; he retired 1 Jan 1783; he died 1793.

In another account Alexander came from Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland and settled in Chambersburg, Franklin Co, PA before 1775. He was a surgeon in the Revolutionary War and died on 9 Dec 1792 in Chambersburg. His wife, Margaret, later married Samuel Jack and moved to Georgia.

He resided in a white rough cast house on the corner of Queen and Water Street in Chambersburg, Franklin Co, PA and lived with brother-in-law, Major Robert Allison.

In the Federal Census for Franklin Co, PA 1790 Dr. Alexander Stewart had 2M under 16/1M over 16/2F. He left his donation and bounty lands in Mercer and Lawrence Cos, PA. His donation land was in Districts #2 and #7; in Union Twp, Lawrence Co, PA #88, 300 acres and all to Alexander Stewart, surgeon, surveyed 15 Jun 1786; patent on 27 Feb 1787. In 1791 he had a house and lot, 6 tablespoons, 12 teaspoons, 1 horse, 2 cows. His will was written 31 Mar 1792 leaving his donation/bounty lands in Mercer and Lawrence Cos, PA to his brothers and sisters in Scotland, some of whom later came to settle there. He had no children. His will was probated in Franklin Co, PA on 30 Jan 1793; by 1 Aug 1821 with much wrangling among the Scottish heirs they sought to get land, monies, and the watch from the widow. Finally Alexander’s wife, Margaret, who had remarried to Samuel Jack, gave up the fight and moved to Georgia.
