OBITUARY

Death of A. McLennan Monday, July 8, 1935, at 3:50 a. m. a prominent West Texas pioneer, Alexander McLennan passed away at the Stamford hospital after a serious illness of one week. Ha had been in poor health for more than a year. Mr. McLennan was one of the most highly respected citizens and prominent ranchmen and farmer of this part of Texas.

Alexander McLennan was born in Ross Shire, Scotland, May 16, 1848 and died at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 22 days. He came from Scotland at the age 19, to Montgomery, Ala. From Alabama he went to Missouri and then to Texas in the early seventies, living in San Marcos a short time, later moving to McLennan country, settling at Battle where he married Miss. Mary Montgomery on January 14, 1886. Here he lived until coming to Haskell county in 1901, where he resided in the Ericsdale community until his demise. Mr. and Mrs. McLennan would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary had he lived until January 11, 1936. His parents were very devout members of the Presbyterian church, and he was dedicated to the church by his parents in infant baptism.

To Mr. and Mrs. McLennan were born eleven children. Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Mary McLennan, three daughter Mrs. J. F. Bean, O. G. Houston and Miss. Vera McLennan of Stamford and four sons, William Ross McLennan of Nata Ark.; Gladstone, Alex and Thomas McLennan of Stamford; 8 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild survive also.

Other relatives present were Mr, and Mrs. W. T. Broils, Waco, Texas; H. L. Thompson Sweetwater; Mr. and Mrs. John Whaley and daughter, Joyce, of Hamlin; Mr. and Mrs. Gene McLennan and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Stores, of Haskell.

The pallbearers were Fred Shaw, Gus Gillespie, Claude McCowan. Tony Schaffear, J. Z. Williams, and Tull Newcomb.

Funeral services were held at Howard at 5:30 p. in. Monday with Rev. Charles Tucker, Presbyterian pastor, of Haskell conducting the services. Interment was made in Howard cemetery with Osment-Barrow in charge.-Contributed.

(One error in this obituary is that Alexander married Mary in Lorena, south of Waco. Alexander and family didn't move to Battle, east of Waco, until after Alexander's father died. This obituary also makes it sound like Alexander is moving to from Alabama to Missouri then on to Texas by himself. He is actually a young man making these moves with his parents and siblings. - Dolin F. Hughes)
