Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land in Virginia:

  • Alexander McDonald, as eldest surviving son of Randolph McDonald, along with his mother, Jean, received title to Randolph McDonald's 141-acre tract in Beverley Manor. This tract was sold to John Ramsey in the 1768 transaction, listed below.
  • 10 May 1780 - Indenture in which William Preston and William Thompson, Executors of the Will of William Patton, late of Augusta County, deceased, sell to Alexander McDonald of the County of Botetourt, a tract of land in the said county of Botetourt, Formerly Augusta County, containing 100 acres more or less, on a Branch of the Catawba called Middle Lick Rune, etc. (for 25 pds 12 shillings) - Recorded May Court 1780. [Botetourt County Deed Book 2, pg. 539].
  • 13 August 1785 - Alexander McDonald received a patent for 75 acres "on a branch of the Catawba called Middle Lick Run", (as listed in the dispositions below).

Alexander McDonald and Margaret ( ) and Jean ( ) McClelland, his mother, to John Ramsey, £100, 141 acres in Beverley Manor; corner Andrew Russell on branches of Christie's Creek; oak on Maxwell's branch; Andrew Russell's line. Teste: Hugh Ross, Andrew Russell. Delivered: William Ramsey, 5th October, 1772.
  • Page 515.--16th May, 1768. Alexander McDonald, John Gray and William Hutcheson to John Ramsey, bond in £200 conditioned to make secure title to 141 acres for £100 in Beverley Manor, excepting mines and minerals, if any (mentions deeds of lease and where as having been made on same date as this).
  • 14 October 1788 - Indenture in which Alexander McDonald and Margaret, his wife, of the County of Botetourt, sell to David Hanson, of the same county - for 175 pds - Two tracts of land in said county - on a branch of the Catawba called Middle Lick Run one containing 100 acres and the other containing 75 acres which was granted to the said Alexander McDonald by - Patent dated 13th (sic) August 1785 - Recorded same date.   • 1808 DEED: Jefferson Co, TN, 1 Apr 1808, DBI-145. Alexander McDonald [McDannel] to John Hawn, 65 acres, $100, on the waters of Bent Creek; being part of a 150 acre survey which said McDannel purchased of Alexander Outlaw. THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ALEXANDER McDONALD 19 JUNE 1811 Will Book 2, Page 16-17, Jefferson Co, TN.
In the name of God Amen, I, ALEXANDER McDONALD of the county of Jefferson and state of Tennessee, being in health of body and of a sound mind and memory blessed be God, do this nineteenth day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand and eight hundred and eleven, make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following (that is to say) imprimis, I give and bequeath to my loving wife MARGARET McDONALD, the house in which we dwell together with such part of the plantation round the dwelling house and outhouses as she shall choose. And also two horses and 2 cows and calves to be hers during her life time and I give unto her forever, all the household furniture and all the farming utensils, also eight head of hogs, such as she shall choose to be disposed of as she pleases.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my five sons, RANDOLPH McDONALD, JOHN McDONALD, JAMES McDONALD, ALEXANDER McDONALD AND THOMAS McDONALD all my land being two hundred and eighty six acres to be theirs and their heirs forever, allowing to my dear wife as a fore said such parts as she shall chose during her lifetime, if she shall outlive myself -
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter MARGARET McDONALD one Negro girl named SALL to be hers and her heirs forever; also the cattle and mare and colt and two feather beds and furniture that is now in her possession and called hers to be hers and her heirs forever.
And my will further is that my daughter MARY WILLIAMS keep what property I have delivered to her as hers; And I further will that my executor herein-after to be named shall sell all my perishable property that I shall be possessed of at my decease that is not mentioned in this my last will and testament and divide the money arising from he same with all he can collect from those indebted to me by bonds and lands, notes or accounts equally amongst my daughters MARY WILLIAMS, and my five grand-children, ALEXANDER McDONALD (son of JOHN McDONALD), ALEXANDER McDONALD (son of ALEXANDER McDONALD), ALEXANDER McDONALD (son of RANDOLPH McDONALD), ALEXANDER McDONALD (son of THOMAS McDONALD,) and ALEXANDER WILLIAMS, after my said executor retraining a sufficient part to fully satisfy him for his trouble and paying all my just debts and expenses and if my dear wife should outlive myself, my further will is that my said executor shall sell all the perishable property that shall then remain of what is herein will ed to her for life only and the money arising from said sale to be equally divided between my daughter MARY WILLIAMS and my five grand-children before above mentioned.
And I do appoint my beloved son JOHN McDONALD executor of this my last will and testament, in witness thereof on this the second day of April 1812.
