Ewing, Alexander - entered service 1777 in Virginia; born 3/10/1752; died 4/9/1822; married 1788 to Sally Smith who was born 8/12/1761, died 6/15/1840; children's births: John Love 4/11/1788 (died 2/9/1816), James 9/20/1790, Lucinda 12/10/1792, William 1/31/1795 (died 11/29/1796, Alexander C. 9/9/1797 (died 6/13/1834), Randall McGavock 11/25/1799 (died 11/11/1853); Oscar Smith 11/26/1801 (died 10/19/1808), William Black 12/31/1803 who married (1) Sarah B. Bysor born 4/12/1808, died 6/18/1836 (2) 3/21/1838 to Martha C. Graves; William Black's children's births: Mary Louise 12/12/1827 (died 9/12/1833), John Alexander 5/26/1829, William James 1/21/1832 (died 3/7/1833), Martha Ann 12/30/1833 (died 4/2/1836), & Sarah Bysor 12/31/1835; son William Black made affidavit 1853 in Davidson County, Tennessee, that siblings surviving his mother's death: Randall M. (died 1/11/1853), James, & Louisa McGavock (died in 1847 leaving children: Nancy Chaud, Oscar, Amanda Armstrong & Louisa Graham; soldier's heirs granted Pension in 1853; query letter in file in 1923 from Chester W. Ewing, New Haven, Connecticut, grandson of James M. Ewing (son of Nathaniel Ewing & Betsy McCullock, who resided in Abingdon, Virginia, married 10/8/1805 in Marysville, Tennessee), further Nathaniel Ewing, son of Virginia Revolutionary War soldier Alexander Ewing who resided in Wythe County, Virginia, & moved to Marysville, Blount County, Tennessee.     Died on the 9th inst, Captain Alexander Ewing of this county, age 71. He was an officer in the Revolutionary War and one of the first settlers of this county.

    ... Alexander Ewing was lieutenant in the Virginia Line when promoted to captain. He was aide to Gen. Nathaniel Greene in the Southern campaign and was wounded at the battle of Guilford Court House. He died in Tennessee in 1822.
