Comments: Beckstead, Alexander (Male)Alexander was the second assistant Captain of a Company of Saints emigrating from Canada to Illinois in 1837. Alexander was a very giving person. He assisted materially in sending outfits back to the Missouri River after emigrants. When flour was $25.00 per sack, he gave it to the poor instead of selling it. He was the main pillar in building the West Jordan meetinghouse. Alexander helped dig the first ditch through which water was taken from the Jordan River. Alexander was also the originator of the Beckstead Ditch and helped in many other projects in the upbuilding of the West Jordan settlement. Alexander owned the first blacksmith shop in West Jordan. Alexander raised 70 bushels of wheat an acre and 70 to 100 bushels per acre of oats and barley, and 500 to 600 bushels of large size potatoes per acre. References
