Will of Alexander Beggs

In the name of God Amen this Nineteenth Day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Eighty five, I Alexander Baggs of Rockbridge County & State of Virginia calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament.
Imprimis, I give and Recommend by Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it & as for my Body I recommend it to the Earth from whence it was taken and to be Buried in a Christian like and Decent manner at the Discretion of my Executors nothing Doubting but the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty Power of God and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I give Bequeath and dispose of in the following manner and form:
Imprimis, it is my Will and I do Order that in the first Place all my Worldly Debts be paid and satisfied.
Item, I give and bequeath unto Sarah my Dearly beloved Wife my oldest daughter Jean & my three youngest Viz. Margaret, Martha and Frances McBrides Plantation now belonging to me with the two Surveys adjoining it to be sold when the youngest comes of Age & equally divided amongst the whole likewise Plow and Tackling and two Work Horses & to Sarah Baggs my Wife I give and Bequeath my Gray Mare and Colt to be her own property four Cows & two Yearlings and Sixteen head of Sheep, Six head of Hogs, the Household Furniture & Plenishing to be at her disposal.
I bequeath and devise unto my well beloved son Thomas Baggs the Plantation I now live on and the other Survey joining it that the Fulling Mill is on to him and his Heirs or Assignes for ever Excepting Sd. Thomas is to give my son James a Quantity lf Land of the old Survey beginning at a White Oak and Button Wood on the off Side of the Meadow & Running from Thence as it is marked likewise Thomas is to pay unto James the Sum of one hundred Pounds Current & lawful Money of Virginia to be paid in the following payments Viz. fifteen Pounds yearly for six years & Ten pounds the seventh.
Item, I Bequeath and Devise untio my beloved Son, James the Plantatin the Meeting house Stands on now belonging to me to him his Heirs and Assigns for ever Excepting one Acre about the Meeting house for the use of the Congregation. I give him also one Black Mare to be his own property and likewise one Bay Colt.
Item, I Bequeath and devise unto my four Daughters viz. Agness, Elizabeth, Sarah & Mary my plantation lying on the North ranch of the James's River and the Entry adjoining it which Impower my Executors to Sel[l] to the best Advantage and Divide the Price equally amongst them.
Item, I Bequeath and Devise unto my Daughter Jean's child named Sarah a tract of Land Joining John Spences and Coll. Poseys Land containing one hundred and fourteen Acres which I Empower my Executors either to Sell or to make for her a Title for sd. Land which she shall think most to her Advantage.
Item, I will and order that my Bay Mare and her Cold be sold & their Price put to the use of Discharging my Debts & shat Cattle and Hogs Remains to be put to the same use And if there by any Remaining after my Debts are Dischargd I Bequeath them all to my Wife Sarah to use as She thinks fit.
Item, the Waggon I allow to be kept in my son Thomas's Custody & to be for the use of the Family when every any of them has Occasion for her.
Item, the fall crop that is now in the Ground I will and Order that if the Family should Divide and each goes to their Respected Places Alloted them be Divided According to the Number of their Respective Familys.
I likewise Constitute make and Ordain my Wife Sarah Baggs and my son Thomas Baggs my Sold and only Executors of this my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I here unto Set my hand and Seal this twenty first Day of November one thousand Seven hundred and Eighty five.

This Writing purporting the last Will & Testament of Alexr. Baggs Dec'd was presented in Court by Sarah Baggs and Thos. Baggs Executors therein named and proved by the Oaths of William Paxton, William Barkley & James Barkley Witnesses thereto & Ordered to be Recorded. And on the motion of the said Executors who made Oath According to Law Certificate is granted them for Obtaining Probate thereof in due form giving Security whereupon they together with William Paxton and John Grigsby their Securities entered into and Acknowledged Bond in the Penalty of £2000 with Condition According to Law.

    Alexander Beggs was born ca. 1715, and died between 21 November 1785 when he wrote his will, and 07 March 1786, when his will was probated in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He married (1) Anne, who died ca. 1794. Alexander later married (2) Sarah. Surnames of his wives are unknown.

    From the will of Alexander Beggs (who settled on Buffalo Creek about 1745), dated Nov. 19, 1785, and proved March 3rd 1786, we learn that he had ten children --two sons and eight daughters. Of the two sons, Thomas and James, the former appears to have been the older and was named the executor of the will. The daughters were Jean, Agnes, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Margaret, Martha, and Frances. Thomas Beggs married Ann Whittlesey (sic) April 4 1786. Agnes married James Hickman May 3 1786. Sarah married Samuel Whittlesey August 2 1786. James married Janet Anderson Feb. 8th, 1787. Martha married Jonathan Poage Mar. 2 1794. Mary married John Hamilton Mar. 2 1794. Frances married McBride-- no date. The estate of Sarah, widow of Alexander Beggs, was appraised June 3, 1794.

    THE CHILDREN:-

    1. JEAN -- oldest daughter. She and her child, Sarah, were named in Alexander's will.
    2. MARY -- born Jun. 3, 1770, died Dec. 29, 1860, married JOHN HAMILTON by Rev. Samuel Houston on March 20, 1794. Death register has her as daughter of Alex. and Anne. Information reported by son Alexander.
    3. AGNESS -- married JACOB HICKMAN by Rev. Edward Crawford May 30, 1786.
    4. SARAH -- married SAMUEL WHITLEY by Rev. James McConnell August 29, 1786
    5. ELIZABETH --Named in her father's will. No additional information.
    6. PEGGY -- married JACOB SUSONG March 17, 1792
    7. MARTHA --born before 1773, died May 19, 1840; married JONATHAN POAGE by Rev. Samuel Houston. License, March 24; Bond, March 25; Marriage, March 27, 1794.
    8. FRANCESS-- born Sep 20, 1779, married MORDIACI CROSS on September 7, 1801 Marriage consent was signed on Sept 7, 1801 by herbrother Thomas states that "Francess... d/o Alexander Beggs, decd.... is now in her 22nd year".
    9. JAMES --married Jannet Anderson on May 6, 1787. (Note: James and his family moved to Ohio.)
    10. THOMAS born about 1760, died late 1839--early 1840 married ANN WHITLEY by Rev. Edward Crawford on May 30, 1786.
