Albert Moss was born in 1886 at Aley Green in the parish of Caddington, Bedfordshire. He was the son of a straw bonnet sewer named Elizabeth Moss. Albert appears in the 1891 census living with his mother, older sister and great grandmother at Aley Green. By 1901 Albert was working as an errand boy in the local straw hat trade.

In 1903, when Albert was seventeen years old, his mother married a gardener named Charles Allen, who thus became Albert's stepfather. The 1911 census finds Albert living with his mother and stepfather in a four roomed house at Aley Green. By this time Albert was working in an iron foundry.

Albert has yet to be researched after 1911.

Although the name here is given as Joseph rather than Albert, it is considered this is likely to be an error. The birth index and 1901 and 1911 censuses clearly say Albert, whilst there is no Joseph Moss birth registered in the Luton district around 1886.
