Note: He retired as a Captain in 1958 but in 1959 he was addressed in Pres. Eisenhower's letter as "Admiral," which is also the rank given on his official grave marker. No indication yet found of when this (post-retirement?) promotion took place. Do not have exact date, but it was not uncommon during that period for 0-6's (Navy captains) to be promoted to Rear Admiral (lower half) upon retirement.     ALBERT COLLINS BURROWS Shawnee, Oklahoma "Acey" is our foremost proponent of the power of words and has repeatedly proven his ability to handle them. Witticisms and superlative adjectives flow as freely from his exquisitely chiseled mouth as does the oil from a gusher of his native state. We shall long remember his funeral peroration at the Burial of Math; his eloquent flow and gift of mimicry have lessened the tedium of many a field day at sea. Slow to get started, "Acey" is irresistible underway and behind a lot of surface nonsense hides a clear, cool mind and a capacity for quick, sound judgment. That, and a personality which has made him a host of friends, will carry him far. Outside of Math his Academic worries have been nil. However, due to temperament, we'll say, his class standing is about five times lower than it should be. Although busy working his way through a tangled heap of integral signs his first two years, he found time to make the Plebe Water Polo team and write occasionally for the Log.     Dear Admiral Burrows:{1}
    Thank you for your note of the tenth. I am delighted that you believe my casual, but nonetheless deeply felt, remark at the last press conference was effective. I don’t want to sound unduly prejudiced, but I doubt that any man, trained as you and I were in the service of our country, could act with any motivation other than that of the "public good."{2}

    With best wishes, Sincerely

    ----------

    NOTES:

    1. Burrows (USN, ret.) was president of the Profit Sharing Research Foundation in Chicago. During World War II he had commanded submarines and submarine divisions 12 and 13 in the Atlantic Submarine Force.

    2. During Eisenhower's July 8 news conference a reporter had asked if the frequent use of the President's veto power would boomerang and result in a negative public image of the presidency. Eisenhower had replied that he was "not thinking so much of public image" as he was "the public good" (see Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1959, pp. 506 - 16). Burrows had written (same file as document) that the remark had filled him with "great and very real pride." The answer had "at once struck down the puffery of how would it look? And how will it sound?" and was "the very essence of honest dedication to the good of all."
