Agnes was a devout Roman Catholic and skilled needlewoman who enjoyed making altar cloths. Prior to marriage, she had worked as a cotton weaver since starting work half-time in her school days. She was the youngest of a large family, all her siblings being born in Burnley, like herself.

She was known for her beautiful complexion, and had soft, light brown hair.

Agnes was 'Granny' to me, Helen-HWMT, and died just before I was 11. Had she lived a few more years, I would feel that I had known her better. In my lifetime, she was not a well lady.

Favourite Sayings

  • "It's no good crying over spilt milk"
  • "I'm all butterfingers" or "I'm all thumbs" - or was that "I'm all fingers and thumbs"? These, because of the effect of her diabetes on her hands.
