Adolphus Scriven was born in 1841 and baptised on 4th April 1841 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of Mary Scriven, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William Scriven, a cordwainer (shoe maker). Adolphus appears in the 1841 census living with his parents, siblings (who were half siblings from his father's first marriage) and paternal grandmother at West Street in Crewkerne.

Adolphus' mother died in 1844, when Adolphus was only three years old. He appears in the 1851 census living with his grandmother and half siblings at the Castle Inn in Crewkerne. His father was away from home on census night, but appears again in the 1861 census back at the Castle Inn, where he was by this time the innkeeper. By 1861 Adolphus was working as a cooper.

No further positive sightings have been found of Adolphus after the 1861 census. There was an Adolphus Scriven who was a carpenter of about the right age who may have sailed from London to Sydney in 1898, but if this is him, where was he between 1861 and 1898?
