Adam Hurlburt was captain of an alarm company that turned out to repel the British attack on New Haven. During the latter part of the war he was stationed in Vermont near Lake Champlain and after the war was over (about 1786) he brought his family to Underhill VT.

Adam was one of the eight men who founded the first church (now the United Church) in Underhill.

    Paraphrase of letter from George B Hurlburt about his grandfather's (Waite Hurlburt) service in war of 1812 and his great grandfather's service in revolution. Letter is looking into land grants. "Adam was a captain I think in the Commissary Department, and I think, enlisted from Conn., but afterward moved to Underhill, VT. ... Our family lost a letter in a fire which destroyed the old homestead once, a number of years ago. The letter was signed by George Washington, recommending Adam for a pension and stating his services."
