Abraham was born in Bedford Co., PA and came with his parents to Knox Co., Oh. The Leedy Chronicle reported in November 1918 "That the impressions of this journey of 240 miles over trails of a new and wild country were never (erased) from his memory. The life of more than two weeks in a covered wgon on his move of a wearisome distance, the greater part on foot giving place in the wagon for the young children--for there were eleven of them--the youngest but a few months old; was a rigorous introduction to the severe toil and privations of the frontier life that he come to know." Abraham Long was a man of reserved dignity and keen intellect, according to Ogier. He is remembered for the quietness of his speech and for the innate kindness that he bestowed upon one and all. Their home built in 1856-57 was located Southwest of Butler, Ohio on the Divelbiss Road. In 1831 Abraham Long bought 50 acres in Knox Co. for $150.00. He sold this land in 1835 and bought 120 acres in the SE quarter of Section 36, Jefferson Twp. Richland Co., Ohio. In 1835 Abraham and Catherine became members of the Dunkard Church. They were among those who withdrew form the church because of a doctrinal dispute and formed what was known as the "Leedy Church". Thae differences were resolved in a short time and the Leedy Church and two other congregations formed what became known as the Church of the Brethren. Abraham and Catherine were devoted members of this Church all their lives. Abraham Long, like his maternal grandfather abraham Leedy, was blind during the last years of his life. When Abraham and Catherine were aged and infirm they moved to Butler, across the street from their son John. They are both buried in the Butler, Ohio cemetery.
