Concord records have caused some people to misidentify Abigail as Abigail (Waite) Baker. But there is conclusive evidence that she is, indeed, Abigail Ballard.
Concord records quoted:
- p. 60: Sam'll Wheat & Abegail Baker both of Concord were maryed April ye 7th 1703
- p. 89: Boaz Brown and Abegail Wheat both of Concord was married by Justice minott September ye 10th day: 1716
Abigail Ballard was unmarried at the time of her father's estate distribution in 1691, but old enough to sign her own name[3].
Middlesex Probate File 2931: Will of "Abigail Brown of the Town of Concord ... formerly wife to Samuel Wheat late of Concord Deceased and now Relict widow to Boaz Brown of Concord Deceased", dated 12 Jan 1724/5, probated 5 Sep 1726, mentions her sisters Sarah Holt, Lydia Butterfield, Mary Butterfield, Hannah Spaulding, Elizabeth Blunt and brother John Ballard, which connects her with the Abigail Ballard who, along with her brother and the husbands of those same sisters, signed that estate distribution.[1]
It is possible there is an unknown marriage to a Mr. Baker prior to the 1703 marriage to Samuel Wheat, but no such husband has been found or was mentioned in the will, so no explanation of the Concord record other than error is currently available.
