Evolution of Teter from Teterton

From Teeter Genforum

I would like start with the origins of George Teater as Scotch Irish English lines of how the the Tetertons morphed into Teder to Teeter and Teater Tetor.

Samuel Teterton Tyrrell NC is shown as the as the son in law of Thomas Evans 1730s Samuel Teterton is found on Deeds Surry Virginia with Benjamin Evens John Evans the unlce and brother of Thomas Evans Tyrrell NC. Surry NC 1730s Samuel Teterton drops Ton from name. Samuel Teeder Teder Tuder. Signs deeds and name with X. found under Samuel 1744 is Jacob Teder Deeds with in laws the Bruce family.

Jacob Teder arrives Edgecomb early 1750s with brothers Samuel Teder both sered as Clerks of the Court Edgeomb NC George Teder appears to have moved to Beaufort NC with his uncles Benjamin Evans George Thomas Evans and a Benajmin Tedder. George is taxed with 2 sons Thomas Tedder and George Tedder jr, by 1780 Tettor Duplin and Dobbs NC.

Mary, Stephen, Samuel and William Teddar in the 1800 Bladen census. Samuel and William Teddar in the 1810 Bladen census. Samuel Tedder in the 1820 Bladen census. William Tedder in the 1830 Bladen census. Deeds in Bladen County mentioning Elizabeth, Ge., Geo., George, James, Jesse, Samuel, Thomas and William Tedder.

George Teder in Edgecombe County in 1752. Jacob and Samuel Teder as court clerks in Edgecombe County in 1753. The Will of George Tedder of Bladen County in 1795 listing wife Mary, sons Jesse, Thomas (other children not mentioned), and brothers and Executors William and Samuel Tedder. Nothing in Duplin Wills, deeds or marriages.

George and Thomas Tedder in Dobbs County in 1780..

1750s late end Jacob Teeder removes from Edgecomb to Rowan co. Shortly thereafter is followed by his brother George Teeder. Both brothers are recorded as Teeder with D., ON SCOUTING PAGES Teeder/ then joined by a George Teeter with older George Teeder. then a ------------- TEETER JR..

It strongly appears George Teater had 2 yrs between his discharge northern forces to his service 1760 with Nataniel Gist. He returned home to Rowan county NC. The point where he and Samuel joined Daniel Boone from Rowan Co as Waggoners to the north French Indian War. By 1759 to 1761 the older Teeders were then recorded as Teater and Teeter from Teeder Tedder from 1st Teterton.

Samuel Jacob George Benjamin shown as sons of Samuel Teterton and Mary Evans of Tyrrell. The name William comes by Samuel Tetertons younger brother William Teterton who remained in Tyrrell until death.

The sons of George Teeder are listed as George Tedder Jr Thomas Tettor Dobbs documents of tax lists Beaufort. The son of Jacob Teder Teeder who morphed into Teeter Teater was joseph Teater Rowan tax list.

Samuel Teder court clerk of Edgecomb has no listing of children. Estimated Samuel died left young teenage orphans George William Teater Samuel Gibson Teater. Samuel wrote in his own hand ,birth 1735. Marker of George Teater indicates true birth 1736, 1st Estimated father of George Teater Samuel Teater was Samuel Teder Teeder ect, Clerk of Edgecombe Court NC.

Names of both George and Samuel connect to this family.

Note George Teeter found with elder Jacob Teeder and elder George Teeder scouting Rowan co between discharge and enlistment with Nathaniel Gist 1760

Note DANIEL BOONE same unit as Samuel Teater Braddocks. defeat . Explanation George and Samuel Teater left Rowan Co NC with Daniel Boones Waggoners to the French Indian War. Note Boone and many relatives of George Teater shown on same scouting page with a George Teeter Rowan co 1759 1760 Documents.

Note The names George Samuel William sole names for many men in George and Samuels lines come from these Scotch English Teaters NC.

note Thomas Teater son of George Tedder Dobbs NC lived and married 1796 Madison Kentucky before settling on the Emory River Tenn.

note. Parris Teater served as Admistrator of Elijah Evans will. Elijah from Wilkes NC grandson of Thomas Evans lt of Rowan co Militia.

Note grandchildren of George Teater stated for the record the Teaters of kentucky line of George Teater were Scotch Irish these Teaters of NC fit that profile.

Note post french indian war timeline. 2 years after George Teater was discharged from Col Byrds unit he appears in St Johns st Phillips Georgia 1764. Appears to be organizing Headrights or useing land patent. This means he was southerner used to the ground of the south.

Note 1766 Samuel Teater shows in Rowan Co officer Capt Teater. ---------- shows Rowan tax list 1766 ///// Teeter. 1768 moves north in law of William Teterton Tyrell NC the Worley family. Samuel Teater settles lists as Singleman Bedford 1768 tax list as Samuel Teeter by Archor Worley Joseph Worley . Not only Samuel Teaters inlaws by 1770 But also the in laws of the Tetertons of Tyrrell NC.

Note Samuel Teater 1811 signs daughter Susanahh permision to marry as Samuel Teaterson.

Estimated pedigree, Grandparents were Samuel Teterton of Tyrrell removed to Surry Virg. Wife name Mary Evans daughter of Thomas Evans Tyrrell NC father Samuel Teeder Teder son of Samuel Teterton Mary Evans sons of Samuel Teder Teeder 1st samuel teater 1735 2nd George William Teater married Sarah Pearis lived in Washinton Co Virg and died Garrard Kentucky. 3rd Elizabeth Teater married Thomas Reynolds from Montgomery NC. Wife of Samuel Teder unknown at this time. Odds 90% Samuel Teder of the Edgecombe NC court was father of Samuel and George Teater. Next we will document the wives. All 3 of them. Ace

Background

It is additional important information concerning discreptencies concerning old incorrect outdated inforamtion of George Teater and his inlaw Benjamin Totten. Had Joseph Kellogg had a proper reserch budget and proper inforamtion 4 decades ago we wouldnt be making so many corrections. For example the following. Johann Georg Dieder, b. March 9, 1739, baptized April 29, 1739, m. Mari Catherine. Children: Johannes Diter, b. March 26, 1769, baptized April 9, 1769; Anna Marie Diether, b. April 17, 1771, baptized May 5, 1771; Elisabetha Diter, b. June 22, 1773, baptized October 3, 1773; Johann Georg Dieder, b. December 12, 1775, baptized January 5, 1776 in Delbehaden township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Source- "The Deter Family History, A Genealogy, Beginning with Johann Georg Dieder, Born in 1739." Produced by the Deter Family History A Genealogy of John George Dieter by Eunice Deter Geraldine Deter Theodore Deter published in the 1850s. This book was written by the Grandchildren of the John George Dieter born baptized on the Opequon Virg 1739. This the Dunker family which came on the ship Allen are all buried Delbehaden Township Berks PA. Its clearly documented and the graves are maintained to this day easy to inspect. He was not the George Teater of Washington Co and Garrard KY. It was a olden mistake by Joseph Kellogg which has been copied by Patsy Benton in the book Teaters of Kentucky. Until now the Teaters of Kentucky have simply failed to make the vital corrections, as did the Teter Hinkles by Jeff Carr on the same Kellogg manuscript. Kellogg simply didnt have the resources to get the job done right pre internet., The book and CD of Dunker John George Dieter is sold by Daniel Wenger 511 Hamstead Way Santa Cruz ca 95062 danielwanger@worldnet.attnet.

Many family members from the Teaters of Kentucky bought the book of Patsy Benton, Teaters of Kentucky and are relying on that ,wrong incorrect information origianly produced by Joseph Kellogg. In the book it simply copies Kelloggs work which says the John Gorge Dieter boen 1739 is the George Teater of Kentucky this is totally incorrect. Many of them havent gotten the word, or troubled themselves to veiw new information... I have to cast the next portion as nothing more high drama fictional pass the buck genalogy. It flys across the internet that Parris Teaters father inlaw was runaway Tory from

New York married to Dutch Aristicrate and joined the Patriots in Virgina, He was robbed and killed in Lynchburg 1794. Its near fantasy genealogy. Benjamin Totten appeared as a Orphan 1764 as Benjamin Tutdon , apprenticed to Miller.
The 1st John Tuton appeared in the northen neck 1724 as squater alone at Goose Creek. Evicted by the Aubry Awebbreys ect 1748. He is spotted in NC with Absolum Tuton 1750s Miltias.
John Totten a brother of Benjamin Totten was on the Muster Rolls with Sgt George Teater battle Point Pleasant.

In the year 1802 Capt Benjamin Totten Jonas Griffith father of Samuel Griffith Jackson Tenn. Benjamin Totten Jr listed as Private 2 documents War 1812. Therefore Benjamin Sr was Still alive in 1802. Therefore George Teater Sr was still married to Esther Griffith at this time, Benjamin Totten was still married to his wife Ester at this time. Sometime after 1802 the 2nd wife of George Teater being Ester Griffith died leaving 3 children Lewis Nancy and Susy.

Sometime after 1802 Benjamin Totten died leaving his wife Ester a widow. In the year1813 George Teater took a trip to Overton Tenn with his son Parris and wife Rebecca her sister Easter and husband George Hohimer brothers James Totten and Joseph H Totten and a Richard Teater. To give a Power Attorney to Benjamin Totten Jr clerk of Overton Tenn Court. The Power of Attorney regarded a land claim against a David Doak who also lived in Overton Tenn sme time. George Teater marred his 3rd wife also named Esther sometime between 1802 and 1813, Only 3 Teeters are mentioned, Richard Teeter Parris Teeter and father George Teeter Sr. Explanation the land in question belonged to Ester the former wife of Benjamin Totten present wife of George Teeter. Thats why the Tottens need these 3 Teeters on the Power of Attorney. If it was Totten land they wouldnt need the Teeter men to sign off. Lewis Nancy Susy were not included becuse they were childen of 2nd wife Esther Griffith 2nd wife of George Teater. Well he was a very clever man. the 1st clerk of Overton Tenn. one of the longest Judges in Obion Tenn

All his boys were well known Judges in Western Tenn. the 1st Post Master of Obion. Academic but I dont get the view of him tracking down desperados River and Land Pirates chasing Choctows and hostiles.

There is a old news article. Benjamin Totten alarmed the settlement when he came strutting into Jackson tenn. he was dressed in full indian garb as was his wifes and kids. he taught the folks to make a Indian mush which the people subsided on for many years. Its a article on one of the sites I try to find it again. It didnt say Jr or Sr. If it was truley Ester the widow of Benjamin Toten if he died in 1794 as lore has it, then my Parris Teater and my Rebcca Totten were step brothers and sisters. My Parris married his step sister. If it was Ben didnt die till after 1802 then George just married his sons wife mother. Ester had 3 kids with George if she was benjamin Tottens widow she would of been about 40 1796. if she was Samuel Griffiths sister she would of been a younger maiden. None of George teaers kids by Esther show any records to the Tottens. Thats why I think he married 2 ladies named Ester after Sarah died. But we will never know unless we can find a record of Benjamin Tottens death in Wythe Co becuse thats where David Doak lived. as well John Totten and John Griffith lived1793. Parris

Explanation.

2 Brothers Jacob Teeder and George Teeder removed from Edgecomb and beaufort Co to Rowan Co with the early family the Evans thier uncles cousin ect Thomas and Benjamin Evans others.

Between 1759 to 1760 the original name Teterton morphed Teder in Surry virg 1730s 1740s then Teeder to Teeder Teder Tedder in tidewater NC Edgecomb Beaufort early 1750s the late French Indian War era in Rowan Co to Jacob Teeder George Teeder into Teeter and Teater.. these Teaters originated and were from the Brittish Isles..

We should note which is well documented already that the George Teater of Washington Co Virg and Garrard Kentuckys cloeset inl aws families and friends were from here Rowan Co. Being Squire Boone Abigail Van Cleave William Van Cleave Squire Boone is taxed alongside George Teater as well as Abihail Vancleave widow of william van cleave from 1787 to 1792 up to 1810 Madison and Garrard KY in addtion we have the notes of Squire Boones son in law logan who said the closet men to him where Samuel Teater, Teaters father Inlaw Joseph Ray a Charles Teater Amrose Ross willam Teaters father in law , Logan all the rest go back to Rowan Co NC

Note that George Teater Jr 2rd son of George Teater married William Vancleaves daughter Mary Vancleave from Rowan Co where the Teaters lived. Note the names of Jacob Teaters family are William George and Samuel same names of George Teater of Garrard Kentucky which repeat themselves for 5 generations..

note there was a young revolution Patriot here Rowan Co same name George Teater. I show Capt Teeter serverd here 1766. Samuel Teater started his family with children when he was nearly 40 yr sold it could be estimated he had a 1st wife here in Rowan Co before he moved 1768 to the north.

What happened after the French Indian War.

George Gillman Smith as a printed story of Georgia 1901 Georgia Colonial and State government from 1754 to 1800 This Manuscript Documents Headrights and Land Patents, 1765 -Geo Teter- William Tevin George Tivenor James Taylor John Tannahill at St John Liberty St Pillips St David Parishs Georgia. special note. St Pauls Parish shows James Parris 1756 who is mentioned many times in with Richard Parris..

Explanation it appears that Samuel Teeter went back to Rowan Co became a widower around 1768 then went north. George Teater went father south to Georgia and went north to NC -Virg 1768 . he may have been working on some trading operation there with the Parris family or others..

Records of Bedford Barre Colrain 1768. Archor Worley was the 1st group of Indian Traders to establish on the Juanita River 1728. It appears his younger brother Col John Worley settled in tidewater NC. is shown to be a relative of William Teterton of Tyrrell NC

1768 tax list Samuel Teeter freeman -single Thomas Girty 5 horses. interesting note listed as brother of War Cheif Sinom Girty. Colerain Archor Worley Joseph worley -joseph was Samuel Teaters brother inlaw they both married Doddridge sisters. Archor Worley Anthoney Worley.

Samuel Teater married the next year to Mary Doddridge he was 36 yrs. This suggests by the conditions of times he was the Capt teeter listed back in Rowan co 1766. Married to woman there became a widower and left a son young George Teater behind there.. Daniel Boone wrote in the seige of Boonesborough Capt Teter was his friend. The only way that could of happened was from a relationship back in Rowan co NC--Parris 08:24, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Lewis Craig TETER - Sally POWE GARRARD KY

Dec 30, 1819; Bond: Benjamin BROWN

The Poe family kept a record or file. I understand it names the parents of Lewis Craig Teater as George William Teetor and Esther Griffith. perhaps they have a Bible or Famiy Record book.

The petition for form the the commonwealth of Kentucky 1792 where George Teater signed as George Tetor at the time that was way he signed his name. Whoever transcibed it in Washinton DC Noted there is ? between George and Tetor. Symbolizes he had put a middle initial faded cannot be read. It certainy shows his name was not John by his signature.

Susannah Teater the grandaughter of George Teater and Sarah left a family record as legacy the Teater line she came thru was Scotch Irish, its a old record listed in the history of Indiana.

Basically Gov David Campbell said it better that the German Teters came after George Teater meaning he was not German that would of been John Teeter and his wife Eve Tuney. Our family group has searched for years to find one document that shows George Teater had a German friend a German inlaw a German trait, nothing exists in that form.

Most of Circumstancial notes show him to be from the tidewater Teters of NC. Who came from England Scotland in the 1600s settled in Perquimans Chowan Bertie areas. They have Many variants. Tutor Tuttor Tetor Tettor Teterton Teder Tuder Teeder Teeter Teater Teaster Teatard Tetard. mMst of them where named George Samuel and William.. 2 mian triats the Kentucky Teaters were horrific Negro Slavers and Feuders traits German families did not hardly engage in.. As I understand George Teaters elder brother Samuel has a headstone on the Mcdonald farm in Union Ohio which leans against a fence along the rail tracks which inscripted Samuel Gibson Teater. Capt born 1735. I have not inspected it ,but thats some info i have recived. I have seen a photo copy in his own hand of his date birth 1735. Where ? nothing stated.. Iam still looking at Robert Tetard who came to Albemarle 1600s and following his line now to 1730 Chowan Co will post it later. As far as middle names I found 1 from Scotland John Phillip Tetard and a few french same name 2 or 3 more 1750s to the revolution era. thats from memory dont quote me The last I found on Robert Tetard was also in Edgecombe Samuel Teaster 1788. As far Johhann Jurg Dieter son john George Deiter the Dunker Anabatist born 1739 buried in Burk PA it shows one thing he was who was, and has absolutly nothing to do with the George Teater of Washington Co and Garrard Kentucky dunkers of early virginia did not eat beef George Teater ate plenty raised it and supplied it.

o show moore evidence of George Teater being from North Carolina and clan of Samuel Teder George Teeder Jacob Teeder Scotch English Teters, present the following records.

1850 Madison County Census shows Thomas Reynolds 83, born North Carolina .

Explanation Thomas Reynolds came to Madison Kentucky before 1789 with a wife named Elizabeth . Not any extra names which have appeared on the internet soley Elizabeth. Thomas Reynolds bought 100 acres from George Teater 1789 Madison Kentucky. Again information on the internet alledges Thomas Reynolds came from Lincoln North Carolina, this cannot be true why?. The Thomas Reynolds of Lincon NC is listed on the Census 1790 for Lincon NC. The Thomas Reynolds who came from NC to Madison is consistantly recorded and taxed in Madison Kentucky. therefore cannot be the Thomas Reynolds of Lincoln Co NC.

Who was Thomas Reynolds and how was he connected to George Teater?.

North Carolina Genweb Tax List of Montgomery Co NC. lists on the year 1780 Thomas Renolds. He is no longer mentioned there, on later Census or Tax Lists. 1790 Montgomery Co NC Census. Benjemin Tedder 1 - i -3. --5 Tithables. 1810 Montgomery Co Census. Geo Teter. 1- 1 -1-- 3 Tithables.

Explanation. Thomas Reynolds and Bejemin Tedder both lived in Montgomery Co NC same decade. Bejamin Tedder names one son George Teter found under Benjamin census records a generation younger than Benjemin Tedder whos son shows as George Teter.

possible- 50 % ODDS. BENJAMIN TEDDER recommeded a introduction of Thomas Reyonlds to George Teater. Thomas Reynolds wife Elizabeth from NC, possible neice sister cousin of George Teater., Appears the Kentucky connection of Thomas Reynolds Montgomey Co was George Teater thru his wife Elizabeth or possible by Benjamin Tedder father of George Teter.

About a land case in 1783 Augusta . This applies to the the George Teter Dieter, Teter Hinkle family of Rockingham German Valley ect. He was a George Teter who lived at the same time as our subject the Scotch Isirh George Teater I will insert some notes here to distinguish the the George Teter Dieter or Teter Hinkle George Teter. In the long list of those from Rockingham county who made claims for furnishing supplies (such as "diets," beef, bacon, oats, coarse linen, horse hire and pasturage etc.) to the army in the Revolutionary war, George Teter's name appears several times: At a court on September 23, 1782, his claim dated Nov. 2, 1781 was allowed. This was for "1 Bullock - 290 lbs @ 2d per lb." At another Court on September 28, 1782, his claim dated May 17, 1782, for 86 lbs. "nt. Post" (or Pork?) at 1-5-0 per lb. wt." was also allowed. Similarly on September 23, 1783, his claim dated June 4, 1782, for pasturing 15 horses for 1 night at 4 d. each.

Therefore this land business in 1783 applies to another George Teter not the George Teater of Washington county and Garrard Kentucky.

George Teater's family [22 August 2008]

Some researchers believe George Teater moved to Kentucky in 1779. That view is in fact supported by the son Samuel's Pension application. [Need citation]. Normally the presumption would be that George's family accompanied him to Kentucky. Some researchers contend that his family remained behind for a number of years, living with his wife's parents. Support for this view does not seem strong. User:Parris argues the case as follows.

ItemUser:ParisComment by User:Quolla6
1. George Teater Sr and his son Samuel migrated to Kentucky 1779. He left his family behind in Washington Co Virginia: Heres the proof.--
2. 1783 Washington Co Survey. page 111 Feb 4 1783 John Carson Assignee of George Teater Assignee of Jermiah Hatfield. I have not found this record in Robertson's extracts. (See Southwest Virginia Sources above.)
3. Virginia land Office Book 1 13 Jan 1784 Bellsfelt Peter granted 380 acres on bend of Dicks River. West side of said river adjoing George Teator.Establishes that a George Teater was in Kentucky on Dicks River by 1784.
4. Washington Co Survey Bakers Creek waters of the Middle fork of Holston actuall settlment 1770 assgned to John Porterfield signed George Tetor march 8 1785 ARRON LEWIS. Witness. An extract for this survey is provided by Robertson

Robertson's extract reads:
"Washington County Surveyor Records, 1781-1797. Page 277 - John Porterfield...150 ac...on a fork of Bakers Creek, waters of the Middle Fork of Holston River...Commissioners Certificate...granted to George Tetor...Beginning corner to Hugh Johnsons land...corner to Crose Keetons land...February 13, 1785 - George Tetor...150 ac...on a branch of the Middle Fork of Holston...60 ac. surveyed on January 16, 1774, includes improvements, actual settlement made in 1770...August 30, 1781 - Assigned to Daniel Riley on October 9, 1783. Signed: George Tetor. Witness: Aaron Lewis - Assigned to John Porterfield on March 9, 1785. Signed: Daniel Riley. Witness: Aaron Lewis".
This record indicates that George Tetor was the original settler of this property and that his settlement took place in 1770. That places him on the property as early as 1770, and that the property was subsequently surveyed for him in 1774. Robertson's transcript indicates that the property was "Assigned to Daniel Riley on October 9, 1783. This might indicate that George Teeter returned the area to sign documents transferring the property, or it might not. In anycase, that does not show that his family remained in the area. At most, it shows that George Teeter returned to the area to sell the property, but even that is not necessarily the case, as he could have made the assignment in Kentucky. A "John Teeter" does aquire property in the area around 1794, which might suggest that some of George's family remained there. However, we don't know what relation John Teeter bore to George (son?, brother?, unrelated?), and in anycase, that would not necessarily mean that George's wife remained in the area until after this date.

5. Madison KY Marraige Book George Tetter = Jr married Mary Van Cleave a neice of Daniel and Squire Boone May 28 1788. Establishes that Geoerge Tetter Jr, was in KY by 1788. I don't know how this point to speak to the question.
6. 1810 Garrard census shows Moses Riddle Indian Melungeon Reserched person, near George Teater Jr and George Teater Sr. 30 Dec 1821 George Teater Jr married Polly Riddle. I don't know how this point speaks to the question.
7. Capt James Downing Company 24 Oct to 24 Nov 1782 James Downing Capt Benjamin Cooper Lieut. Pvt Samuel Teater. Frankfort Historical Society. Establishes that Samuel Teater was in Kentucky by 1782
8 Jan 1834 Pension Office War Dept recieved Sworn Statement sent from Howard Co. Mo by Samuel Teeter confirming service in the Indian Wars Ohio 1782 1783 for Benjamin Cooper. War Dept approved annual pension of $320 per year, based upon statement of Samuel Teeter of Howard Co Mo. Establishes that Samuel Teeter ws in Kentucky by 1782, and later moved to MO
6. 1860 Census Garrard Kentucky Parris Teater place of birth Virginia 1780The ancestry transcription for the 1860 Garrard County Census] does show him as being 80 years of age and born in KY. However, the 1850 census shows him as being born in Kentucky. The 1780 DOB is more or less coincident with the statement by Samuel Teaters says he moved to Kentucky (1779) with his father. Even so, a years variation in age as given in census records of this period is commonplace. Moreover, the area now known as the State of Kentucky was firmly within Virginia's boundaries in 1780. Even if the DOB of 1780 IS exact, the statement he was born in Virginia would be true whether her place of birth was in modern Washington County VA, or within the boundaries of the modern state of Kentucky, as Kentucky was not formed until 1794. Finally, there is even some question as to whether Paris is the son of George Teeter [1]
7. Based upon the above documented facts George Teater did leave his family back in Washington Co Virginia and lived only with his son Samuel Teater in kentucky makeing periodic trips back to Virginia to visit family. His son George Teater Jr is noted there on Assignee of deed 1783. His son Parris born Virginia 1780 The records of Samuel Teaters service in Kentucky, Dicks river Deed is where Boyle KY is today. George Teater then shows 1787 Madison tax list living only with 4 Negro slaves. It is possible that George Teater and son Samuel travelled alone to Kentucky in 1779, and that George's wife and other children did not come until later. However, I don't see how the data cited support the that conclusion. At most, the data show that he might have returned to Virginia to sell his land on Baker's Creek, but that does not prove that his family did not come with him to Kentucky in 1779. Additional data would be needed to show that his wife was present in Washington County Virginia after 1779. Some researchers do not seem to accept the idea that a) Paris Teater was born in Washington County Virginia, or b) was the son of George Teeter of Washington County.
Normally, it would be assumed that George brought his family with him to Kentucky when he came there in 1779. Direct evidence would be needed to support another conclusion, and that evidence does not seem to have been presented.

Irish Tetlers data [26 October 2008]

Much of the following relates to the Tetlers of Ireland. It probably needs a home somewhere other than the George Teater page. I've temprorarily moved them here. While I've no personal intent to pursue George Teater's deeper ancestry, that's certainly something of interest in the overall context of the Southwest Virginia Project. Q 08:59, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

The new focus will be 2 things. 1st all 90% of the all the people connected to George Teater on documents have one thing in common. they appear to have originiated between Kerry amd Limmerick. 40 % are ethnic True Germans of Nassau who migrated to Ireland in the 3rd wave from Nassau. 40% were Former French who lived in Nassau and migrated in all 3 waves.. The 1st wave of detlors were origianly DaTatres. The line in Limerick kept it at Tetler Tettler. The line at Kerry was Teytor Tyter and Tettler.

The last John Detlor to arrive in Limerick is accounted for he had no sons named George. Yet he is listed on the Dublin tax returns from Ballangrane with 2 George Tettlers between 1740s to 1760s and a Jacob Tettler. Its very obvious 2 Paul Smeltzers were living near 2 George Tettlers in Ballangrane.. Its to much of a coincedece that George Teetar and Paul Smeltzer end up dealing with Frederick Starn in America 1768.. Starn could be a corruption of Starnk Star Straen Stork ect. Carlock appears back in ireland as Garlock.

This is what some of the Carlock researchers believe, but in truth, when I've looked at this "Carlock-Garlock" I didn't see much evidence that the two names were the same---other than wishful thinking on the part of some of the very early researchers . It could be true, but I don't see good evidence for this. Q 08:59, 24 October 2008 (EDT)]

The Census records show that Daniel Tettler Capt of the Revolution in Georgia and David Tettler were also Taytor Tutter in 1790 to 1810.Halifax and later Davie County. Jacob Teeter Jacob Teder Teeder. Are the same person. George Teator Teeder Tedder are all the same person. Benjamin Teder Tutor Tedder Tetard are the same person. It appears more that Capt Daniel Tettler was Capt Teeter 1766 Rowan Co. Not Samuel Teater who recieved his rank 1777 in Ohio Co VA.. There is a Jacob George Samuel appear 1730 to 1752 moving around VA and NC.. The children of John Detlor who arrived in 1709 Limerik are documneted solid as a rock as arriving in New York 1760 on the Ship Perry. Then fighting for the Brittish in the Revolution. The 4 early Teaters Tettlers ect would of had to come on a ship from Ireland around 1729 to 1730. Jacob Teeter has a note on Pine Island Bertie Chowan area 1730. He appears in Frederick co va 1744 with a George Teator. The exact same year George Pearis the elder shows up in Frederick Co. George Pearis before he showed in Frderick Co VA was also in Bertie Chowan 1744.

Jacob Teater then aappears with George Teater and Samuel Teater as the Clerks of the Edgecombe Court NC 1752 53.. There is no record of Samuel Teater after 1752 53 yet. George Teater and Jacob Teater left Edgecombe and arrived in Rowan Co around 1756 59 to 61. Another relative shows up with them named Joseph Teater. The focus will be to find exactly where those 4 brothers where in the year 1735 1736 somewhere between Pine Island Bertie NC to Orange Co VA which Frederick Co was cut out of. The person named George Jeter is claimed by the French Huguenot family of John Jeter as one of thier own. The Author of the Jeter Mossiac could be wrong, It could be the same George Teator Teeder Tedder of Edgcombe and Rowan Co..

The other most common thing that involves George Teater is that 90% of his inlaws and allied families were from Rowan Co NC. They all had property and notes also in Washington Co Va Montgomery Co VA as well. They all arrived in Rowan Co about the same time as Jacob Teater and George Teeder when they removed from Edgecombe. The focus will be to try and find the ship and same people arriving from Ireland. The problem is finding the names on Irish ships. The arrival and departures are well listed but not the names of each passenger. The only Teaters listed on documents with George Teater are the 2 brothers Thomas Tettor and George Tedder of Dobbs NC. They were sons of the George Teater of Edgcombe and Rowan Co, and they are the only Teaters who were Negro Slavers as was George Teater.. George Tedder left a will in Bladen Co 1795. Dee Thompson has shown only excerpts of the Will. So the full copy of the Will is needed.. My own focus will be on the above.--Parris 22:38, 21 October 2008 (EDT)

A usefull find already from the website posted below Rootsweb.

note Jacob Tettler is documeted as a son of John Detlor who arrived 1709. He went to new york 1760 on the ship Perry. Here have another Jacob Tettler a much older one not listed in the family of John Detlor. Also note there are 2 very old Smeltzers here. But other Smelters appear in the 1740s and to 1760s as the same name Paul or Paulis Smeltzer. Its been recorded that some of the 1st settlers of Crab Creek left Ireland in the year 1725 others like the Ingles a little later. So we are looking for a Jacob Tettler who arrived from Ireland in that period . Perhaps this Jacob Tettler is the Jacob Teeter Teeder who was in Bertie NC 1730 then was joined by George Teator and Samuel Teater. HUGUENOT FAMILIES These lists were taken from "Irish Pedigrees",vol.2, by John O'Hart. Pub 1892, Dublin. Note: Pronunciation marks were not copied. According to Agnew's Third Volume of the French Protestant Exiles from France (London: Reeves and Turner, 1874), the Foreign Refugees and their descendants, who settled in Great Britain and Ireland,

John Detlor was born in Nassau as Tellier adapted Detlor. His children went by Tettler Tetler.. He is the only one on the Queen Anns list. 1709. Yet there was a Jacob Tettler and 2 George Tettlers in the Ballangrane area of Limerick. They could not be children of John Detlor. So they were a earlier arrival. Jacob tettler was on the 1725 muster with the 2 elder Smeltzers. As we take one person at a time in Crab Creek more and more seem to have origins in the county Limerick Ireland. Thefore there was Paul Tettler 2 John Tettler 2 George Tettler in Ballangrane. John Detlor had 4 children born after Jacob Tettler was on a muster 1725. These other Teters came another way earlier. They are not on Queen Anns list There are 4 others Tudard Testard Testard.. They seem to have adapted somewhere between Teytor and Tettler. 2 George Tettlers and 2 Paul Smeltzers on the same Ballangrane returns and George Teetar and Paul Smeltzer are on the same Crab Creek with other families from Limerick and Frederick Starn is in the miiddle.--Parris 06:20, 22 October 2008 (EDT)

By the timeline this shows the Tetlers used a variety of recordings to Tetlow to Detlor Tettler. it show there was a late dr George Tetler low ect. by his time it would of been the in late 1600s.. It means these Teetlers arrived way before John Detlor on the 1709 Queen Anns list. He arrived single, therefore the other Jacob Tettler listed in the 1720 muster would of been older than the John Tetler who arrived 1709.. both of them are found there the in Ballangrane same time period.

To refresh for a moment. As seen from the table above of Irish arriavls the 1st group of Huguenots Teatsar Testard Tuterd arrived in between 1640 upwards. The last group split beween French and German arrived by Nassau 1709 as Tettler and Detlor. The Tettlers are French living in Nassau for 2 generations before arriving in Ireland 1709. The Rathkeale group Ballangrane kept the spelling Tettler Tetler. the earlier group at Kerry to Dublin used Tetler Tetlow ,where in Kerry it was Tyter. William Tyter married as Teder and arrived sometime before 1720. About the the Timeline of other Crab Creek settlers [Sculls Shells] Birds the Ingles came later. Heres a small article froma Rathkeale Desendent They came from the Rhineland border area between modern France and Germany. Louis XIV, in a display of religious bigotry which sadly still persists in some parts, decided to expel them because they weren't Catholics.

>Angus Baxter writes in his IN SEARCH OF YOUR BRITISH AND IRISH ROOTS: p. 264, >"Palatines: A little-known immigration into Ireland was that of religious >refugees from the Palatinate area of Germany. Some 850 of them landing in >Dublin in 1709. (Many more emigrated to the Americas, where they settled in >Pennsylvania.) Those remaining in Ireland settled mainly in Limerick and Kerry, >and even today many non-Irish and probably German surnames can be found in those >areas." He cites H. Jones THE PALATINE FAMILIES OF IRELAND. Studio City, CA, >1975 (privately printed). > In the area of Co Limerick near Rathkeale where my mother's family live, the Palatines were rented land at low rates by Lord Southwell, a largely absentee Protestant landlord. He hoped they would have a Protestant evangelical effect on the local Catholic population, but most of the Palatines trod a religious middle road and became Methodists. John Wesley even came to preach to them in 1749. Many of them anglicized their names, but you can see their German/French origins. In the Rathkeale area the following Palatine families settled:

ALTON, BAKER, BENNER, CORNEILLE, DOUBE, DETLOR, DULMAGE, EMBURY, GUYER, HECK, LONG, LOWES, MICKS, MILLER, ROSE(ROSS), RUCKLE(RUTTLE), RYNARD, ST.JOHN(SINGEON), SLEET, SHIER, SMELZER, SWITZER, TESKEY, TETTLER, USHELBAUGH, YOUNG.

Some of them used Ireland as a stepping stone to emigration to America. The Palatines were responsible for bringing new agricultural ideas into this part of Limerick, particularly the cultivation of fruit and vegetables.--Parris 04:15, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

State of Tennessee, Wilson County On this 29 th day of September 1832, personally appeared in open Court before the worshipful David C. Hibbitts, Benjamin H. Billings & James Foster – Esquires Justices of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for said County of Wilson, now sitting, Thomas McSpeddin of the County of Wilkes in & State of Tennessee aged Eighty four years, who being first duly Sworn according to law, doth on his Oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7 th , 1832. 1 st That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. Col. William Campbell of Virginia commanded the Regiment of the Virginia Militia to which he belonged, does not recollect the Major, William Edmundson [also spelled Edmiston, Edmondson], Captain of the Company & thinks that John Lowry was Lieutenant of the Company to which he belonged. His best recollection is that Colonel Campbell commanded a detachment of the Militia which was ordered out against the Shawnee Indians on Clinch River – at which time, to wit in the summer of the year 1777 he served a tour of two months in the Militia under the officers above named – they did not have a fight with the Indians that Campaign, Captain Edmundson & his Company pursued them as far as Sandy River, and judging from their trail & the freshness of the signs they had nearly overtaken the Indians & was prevented further pursuit after them in consequence of the sickness of[ George Teter] [?] whom we could not leave, & had not sufficient force to divide, for previous to his sickness the detachment had been divided & sent in different directions after the enemy: they then returned home having served a tour of two months that summe

Note the year is 1777. Something overcame George Teater a serious sickness snakebite a fall many possibilties.--Parris 18:56, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

Rowan Co NC George Teater took the Oath of Allegiance on 6 August 1778 [Court Minutes, Book 4: 163] NOTE In the year 1777 George Teater was Gravely Ill. The following year 1778 a George Teater took the Oath Allegeance in Rowan Co. It appears George Teater left Washington Co VA and went home to Rowan Co NC to recover from his illness. At this time most of his family where in Rowan Co Jonas Griffith William Van Cleave Squire Voone and others. The children of Jacob Teater unknown the children of George Teater are documented as Thomas Tettor and George Tedder Jr who settled in Dobbs Co NC.. It appears the the children of Joseph Teater were Joseph Tedder Jr and a John Tedder exiled to the Bahamas. Jacob Teater and George Teater appear to have had one brother named Samuel Teater Tedder ect. He was the Clerk of the edgecombe court 1753. Samuel and George are 2 of the most poular names in the George Teater family. Samuel Teater most likely candidate of George Teaters father.--Parris 19:24, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

Rev. Varnod was the Anglican minister/missionary in St. George Parish at that time. He made this census when he misunderstood directions just to count the inhabitants. Each head of household is followed by six numbers and perhaps the letter D. The D was used for all dissenters, or individuals not attending the Anglican church. They were Quaker, Baptist, Congregationalist, or other. The first three numbers represent the white (his word) people in the home by men, women, and children. The last three numbers are for slaves by men, women, and children. The last five heads of household in this list are titled Free Negros and Indians, and are called free rather than white. Abbreviations were often used and I did not try to correct spelling.

A listing of family trees on Ancestry, for example, for Paris Teater includes 8 lineages for a Paris Teater born in 1780. Six of these lineages identify his father, and all six of those show him to be "John George Teator", who is generally thought to be a different person from the George Teator who settled in SW VA. this is totally incorrect. this inforamtion was inseteted into a book called teater of kentucky based upon a kellogg manucript with no source sited,. There waS no such peron ever documented at Crab Creek, Bakers Creek ,Clarks Station Madison Kentucky named John then George then Teater. ItS pure Pass the buck the Geneology info produced by kelloggs Manucript.. Kellogg found a German Dunker born 1739 at the Opequon and named him as the George Teater of Washington Co virginia and kentucky. The auther of the book Teater of Kentucky near 3 decades ago mereley copied or quoted Kelloggs speulation without pfroof or a document to sustain this allegation. The name John George Teater is a created image without a fact or document. The subejects name is George Teater and he never used the name John ever. I would be surprised if any reserch could produce such a documnet becuse nothing exists.

User:pariss notes that evidence for the existence of a "John George Teater" in Kentucky, has not been found. This seems reasonable, and is not disagreed with. His observations are as follows:

If someone making these statements could produce a document that actually says John then George then Teater on a Botetourt Militia record 1779, it would be a miracle becAuse no such document exits. Parris Teater father was George Teater not John George Teater is there fact that show anywhere hiS name was John? such as Document? The answer is no. George Teaters son wass named George Teater Jr not John Teater Jr his name was George Teater Jr named after his father George Teater Sr no Johns..

The marraige record of George Teater Jr 1788 is extemely revelent because it shows his 1st documented appearance in Kentucky which suggestes he was living with mom and kids until 1783 or later in Washington Co..

Benjamin Totten a in law of George Teater lived in Montgomery Co with his brother John. In 1782 he left his real family and came to the middle fork of the Holston Washington Co. why? Simple he was looking after George Teaters family.

Arron Lewis who witnessed the Deed between George Teater and John Porterfield is listed near to George Teater on the 1787 Madion Kentucky tax list, as is Squire Boone uncle of George Teater Jr wife and Abigail Vancleave, George Teaters Jr Mother in law. George Teater Jr married the following yr 1788 in Madison Kentucky

Samuel Teater stated he lived at Clarks Station from 1779 outwards to the 1780s. His fathers records show he was a Officer at Clarks Station same time no rank given. Suggestes the Ensign George Teater was his son named after him George Jr not John Jr. Another legend, Parris Teater was born in fort at Danville. ParriS wa born 1780, the fort at Dansville was built 1785. If someone could produce a document of a person named John George Teater it would be amazing because no such document exists. There is some speculation and fantasy that a German Dunker boy baptised as John George Dieter born 1739 is this George, by a manucript of Joseph Kellogg. It incorrect and never happened, John George Dieter is buried in PA in a Mennonite graveyard with the rest of his family..
    • Fact there was no person ever named John George Teater in regards to the notes of George Teater of Washington Co and Kentucky.
    • Fact his son was named George Teater Jr not John Teater Jr or John George Teater Jr.

On a personal E mail from Glen Teater, Author book Teaters of Kentucky, To Johnny Cruz on Sat 3 Dec 2005. Glen Teater said. George Teeter is NOT the son of John George Dieter of the Opequon that we published in our book back in the 70's. Therefore, to be perfectly honest, we can only claim back to George Teeter who immigrated into Kentucky in 1779 from Virginia.

Note Glen Teater said [IS NOT] JOHN GEORGE TEATER DIETER ECT THAT WE PUBLISHED IN OUR BOOK IN THE 70 S. Explanation the very person Glen Teater who wrote in the 1970s that George Teater was a John George Teater made a correction ,and said he [was not] John George Teater as we published in the Book Teaters of Kentucky. WE CAN ONLY CLAIM BACK TO GEORGE TEETER FROM VIRGINIA INTO KENTUCKY 1779. Explanation he said, George Teater was not John George Teater just plain simple George Teeter. Thats That, There was no such person named John George Teater. It was made up by Joseph kellogg and copied and sited by Glen Teater and others. Glen Teater has stated the correction he was not John George Teater!!! his name was George Teater Sr. Thats the only fact according to every documented proof. Any such information stated on the internet is false and incorrect old information, published by Glen Teater who made the correction George Teater!!![ was not]!!!! John George Teater that he published in his book in the 1970s. There is no point on this website to continue using false incorrect fantasy and speculation by alledging the George Teater who lived at Crab Creek, Baker Creek Clarks Station Boyle Ky Madison ky , was ever named John or John George . Its unfair to the true legacy of real George Teater who married Sarah Pearis. Its unfair to the legacy of John Teeter who married Eve Tuney, its unfair to the baby German Dunker born 1739 John George Dieter who was born on the Opequon 1739 and lived and died in PA.. He also buried in PA.--Parris 22:59, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

SAMUEL TEATER said in his pension application I was stationed and remained at Clarks Station near where Danville now stands from the year 1779 until about 1781, except when out on duty. . Samuel Teater said, I went home 1782. George Teater had a cabin on the Dicks River 1784 or before near about 3 mile from Clark Station. During the time period Samuel mentioned, George Teater is listed as a Officer in Clarks Station no rank given. Where Samuel went home is unknown back to Wahington Co Bakers Creek or was home at the time Clarks Station?.

This station is reported as being opened by General George Rodgers Clark 1779, The same year George Teater Sr and son Samuel left Bakers Creek Wahington Co Virginia into Kentucky.

A frontier note Caleb Wallace Montgomery Co Chritianburg should have known George Teater from when he lived on Crab Creek. Jno Taylor Head Clinch 23rd March 1780

C B the Murder was Committed In seven Miles of here."

Major Taylor was the same man at whose home Mrs. Jesse Evans and her daughter sought refuge after her children were killed by the Indians in 1779. This report, made by letter to Colonel Preston, not only gives the date of the Roark massacre and the number of victims but furnishes valuable information as to existing military and economic conditions in the Upper Clinch region at that time. The military authorities of Montgomery County had given no assistance to the inhabitants of the Clinch Valley in repelling the repeated invasions made by the Shawnees; and the Evans and Roark massacres had resulted, as the forts and stations maintained by the settlers were so widely separated that the Indians were able to steal in between the forts and murder the occupants of the outlying cabins. Evidently there was a serious scarcity of corn in the Clinch Valley, which gave a shortage of food for both men and animals. The scarcity of grain seemed to be general throughout Montgomery, owing, possibly, to a bad season, or to the employment of so many of the inhabitants in the performance of military duties. In a letter written the 15th of Feb., 1780, by -Rev. Caleb Wallace,- who was then living near the present town of Christiansburg to Colonel William Fleming, then locating lands under military grants in Kentucky, the Reverend Wallace says: "The Condition of this .Country is truly distressing. Corn has risen to 10, 12 & 15 pounds the Bushel, and it is to be feared that Multitudes will not get it at any Price."

Caleb Wallace with George Teater Clark Station should of been chaplain of Soldiers.. Caleb Wallace had no food in Montgomery Co so he joined George Teater at Clarks Station in Kentucky--Parris 01:03, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

some excerpts from Donald Totten a Sr Totten family genealogist and Kentucky Historian. The paper in search of Benjamin Totten.

We are fortunate in that a fair amount of the family history of Benjamin and Easter Totten and their descendants has been well documented and supported by family, vital and census records. We truly appreciate the dedicated efforts of those family members who have searched, uncovered and recorded the information that we do have. The initial genealogical research on this family was done, in the 1950’s and 60’s, by one of their third great grandsons, Will D. Totten (b.1913), of Fern Creek , Kentucky . Much of the information that we have on Benjamin, Ester and their children was uncovered because of his work. Probably the most important single record that he found was the Power of Attorney Document recorded in Garrard County , Kentucky on July 20, 1813 and Overton County , Tennessee on February 04, 1814. All the family members as heirs of Benjamin Totten Senior are listed as signing and appointing Benjamin Totten Junior as Attorney to apply for and recover title for a tract of land in the State of Virginia . We have not been able to find any record pertaining to this land title and the resolution of this legal action, but we have been able to identify the family grouping and correlate their activities in different counties in Virginia , North Carolina , Tennessee , Kentucky and Indiana . The document listed the mother Ester, [corrected misspelling from ea to es] (former widow of Benjamin Totten Senior), her then current husband George Teeter Senior, the son Benjamin Totten Junior, the daughter Easter and her husband George Hohimer, the daughter Rebecca and her husband Parris Teeter, the son James Totten and the son Joseph H. Totten. By using family and 1850 and later census records, we know exact or close approximate birth dates for all the children and birth states for all the children except for the oldest son, Benjamin Junior. The daughter, Easter was born in Virginia in 1780-81. Rebecca was born in Tennessee in 1781-82. James was born in North Carolina in 1787-88. Joseph H. was born in Tennessee in 1791. Benjamin Junior was born in 1779 and died in 1847, but we have not yet determined where he was born. Since he was not living in 1850 we cannot obtain his place of birth from the 1850 census. Records indicate that only one of his children, Sallie C., was living in 1880. She was born in 1814 and married Dr. Nicholas Lewis Allen in 1830. One of her great nephews, William H. Swiggart, b. 1888, commented, in a letter, about his boyhood visit with her and her daughter, a Mrs Gregory, at Totten Wells shortly after 1890. Sallie is listed as being 45 years old and living in the Totten Wells area with her husband and nine children in the 1860 census. She was also listed as being 56 years old and the Head of Household in the 1870 census for that area. I have searched all of the Allen and Gregory family listings in the 1880 census for the Totten Wells area in Tennessee , but I was not able to find Sallie’s name. The 1880 census records that I reviewed were in very poor condition and most of the listings were not legible. Therefore, I have not yet been able to determine Benjamin Totten Junior’s birth state from the 1880 census records.

I do find that there is a listing for a Sally Allen in the 1900 census, (dated 8 June 1900), for Totten Wells, Union City , Obion County , Tennessee . She is listed as Mother/ in the household of Mary Goak ?, (-?- Mary’s name, as written, is very difficult to read, so the name and spelling, that I have listed, are probably incorrect). Mary is listed as being 27 years old and having been born Dec. 1872 in Kentucky . Her children are listed as Emolly,8, Ernest,7 and Bennie, 6. They were all listed as being born in Kentucky and their father was listed as being born in Germany . It also listed the birth state of Mary’s father and mother as Kentucky and Virginia respectively. Sally Allen was listed as being 76 ? years old and born January 1824 in Virginia . Her father and mother were also listed as being born in Virginia . It does seem unlikely that another Sally Allen, of a similar age, would also be living with a single parent head of household daughter in the small remote village of Totten Wells, Union City, Tennessee over the same period of time; but yet and even though there are some apparent errors and contradictions in the census listings, it would require some significant adjustments in order to reconcile these dates and data with those recorded for Sallie (Totten) Allen, daughter of Benjamin Totten Jr. Noteable considerations relate to: (1.) Sallie Allen’s recorded birth state of Tennessee , not Virginia as listed on the Census, (2.) the date that the census was taken, 8 June 1900 is after the recorded date of Sallie (Totten) Allen’s death of 3 Feb. 1900 and (3.) the extensive age differential between Sallie Allen b. 1814 and daughter Mary b. 1872. Possibly some of these census entries could have been given in error. For example, Sally and her daughter Mary ? may have both been 10 years older than indicated on the census. It would be nice if we could resolve the above discrepancies and provide some credence to the argument that Sallie (Totten) Allen is the Sally Allen who is listed in the 1900 census for Obion County Tennessee. Correspondingly, we could then assume that Sallie’s parents, Benjamin Totten Jr. and Polly McDonald were both born in Virginia .

As a related point of interest, I will mention that early Madison County, Kentucky records list the marriages of Samuel Griffith and Sarah Teater on 12 June 1791 or 1797 and George Teater and Esther Griffith on 4 October 1796. Samuel Griffith is also listed as the bondsman for George and Esther’s marriage. Records also list the name John W. Griffith as one of the witnesses for the will of George Teater Senior. A number of family researchers believe that this Esther Griffith was the former Easter Totten and that this was either her maiden name or she was married to a Griffith for a short time before this marriage to George Teater Sr. There are also a number of other researchers who believe, instead, that Esther Griffith was probably a younger maiden and possibly a sister of Samuel Griffith. The wedding bond would be more appropriate in that situation. They also believe that this particular George Teater was probably not the same individual as George Teater Sr. He may have been a son or nephew of George Sr. and Sarah Teater. Records do indicate that there was another George Teater living in Kentucky or Tennessee around this same period of time. It is believed that this Sarah Teater, who married Samuel Griffith, was probably George Sr. and Sarah Teater’s daughter. The relationship with John W. Griffith has not been established, but it does appear that there was a strong tie between the Teater and Griffith families during that period.

The earliest record that we have found on the activities of Benjamin Totten in Virginia was located in Military Records for that state. Benjamin Totten and John Totten are listed as being in Captain Thomas Ingles Company of Militia in Montgomery County , Virginia on April 07, 1781. It may be noted that the records for some of the other companies stated that their men were all between 16 and 50 years of age. This probably applied to all the companies that were formed during that period. If so, both Benjamin and John had to have been born after April 07, 1731. No records have been found to show that Benj. and Easter were in Virginia prior to 1781. Possibly we should continue to question Benj. Totten Jr’s birth state of Virginia as listed in the 1900 census for Sally Allen’s father.

Greene County Tennessee Court records, show that the Benjamin and John Totten families were both living, for short periods of time between 1783 and 1793, as landowners and tax payers in the original territorial region of Greene County . Other records indicate that this region was, for a time, accepted as a part of North Carolina . The boundaries were later redefined and this territory became the original Greene County , Tennessee . This original Greene County was later divided into a number of smaller counties, including the current Greene County , Tennessee . It is believed that two of Benjamin and Ester S CORRECTION SPELLING Totten’s children, Rebecca and Joseph H. were born in this area. Their birth state of Tennessee is verified by family and census records. On the other hand, it appears that the second son, James, who was born in 1787/1788 was not born in this immediate area. Older family correspondence indicates that James Totten was born near Ashville, Buncombe County , North Carolina . His North Carolina birth state is verified by 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records.

There was also a John Totton (Cotton ?) who, at an early date, was listed as a boat passenger on a trip from Long Island down the Holston River . This John Totton is probably the same John Totten as discussed above and he may also be the John Totten or the father of the John Totten who migrated to Madison and Garrard Counties in Kentucky where he died sometime around 1806. County records show that this John Totten married Jane Reynolds in Madison Co., Kentucky in 1797 and that George Teater was listed as the bondsman. County records also show that this John Totten was sickly while living in Garrard County and probably died at an early age. The administration of a small estate for John Totten was dated 21 April 1806. His widow, Janey Totton, George Teter Sr. and Jos. Kyler were listed as the administrators. There was a minor son John Totton who at the time chose a Jos. H. Fowler to be his Guardian. Jos. H. Totten, Paris Teter and William Totten were listed as holding the Bond for Guardianship when guardianship was terminated in 1817. It is possible that this younger John Totton/Totten may be the John Totten who married Esther Vandike on 24 May 1818 in Davis County , Kentucky or possibly the John Totten who married Peggy McMannus in Garrard County , Kentucky in 1823..

This a good paper which again illistates there no such person named John George Teater. The portion of the TN and KY Power of Attorney is very clear George Teater Sr married the widow of Benjamin Totten Sr. The next portion is very clear Parris Teater a son of George Teater Sr married Rebecca Totten a daughter of Benjamin Totten Sr and Ester. These documnets are solid facts. Family Tree got it wrong there is no such person named John George Teater on any of these documents , only George Teater Sr not John or John George

I have found several comments to incorrect. Esther Girrith was not Esther Totten. This is proved by the 1802 Jackson TN tax list. It shows Benjamin Totten Sr was alive and well a Capt Benjamin Totten in 1802 jackson Tenn with Samuel Griffith father Jonas Griffith . He was listed as Capt Benjamin Totten. His son Benjamin Totten Jr was listed as a private in the war of 1812. Therefore Ester the wife of Benjamin Totten was still living with her huband Benjamin totten SR in 1802. The Esther Griffith who married George Teater Sr 1796 could not have been Esther the wife of Benjamin Totten becuse Benjamin Totten was still alive 7 yrs after George Teater Sr married Esther Griffith.

One family tree is wrong and should have never published a statement that Parris Teater who mrried Rebecca Totten was son a on of mythical character John George Teater. One family tree would need to have a real true document to sutain thier statement which nothing in that regards exists. The true facts are Parris Teater was the son of George Teater not John George Teater a Ficticuos Mythical Character . i show Rebecca Totten was born nearest time 1784 to 1786 by her fathers taxs on the Nolichuckey and the Garrard Co Census list of her age. I show the 1st adult appearance of Benjamin Totten sr 1779 Orange Co NC petition signed as Benjamin Tuttin.--Parris 02:50, 22 August 2008 (EDT)

The movements of Benajmin Totten have a bearing on this topic

In timeline order. John Tuton a Irish Renegade lives on Goose Creek N. Neck Fairfax from 1724 to 1749. Appears near time and place of Absalom Tuton NC militias 1750. Gonzalva family massacered 1750s Hamshire Virg. These are families of the Spainard John Gonzalvo the wild Spainard of Prince Anne Co. A well used name in Parris Teater and Joseph H Totten family nameing pattern, John and Juan Gonzalva.

Augusta Court Order March 17 1764. Benjamin Tuton apprentice to Andrew Miller.. Appears Benjamin Totten is a Orphan. Note most Tottens spelled thier name Tuton Tutten Toten Tuten. before the revolution in the southern states. Totten Totton Toton Toten became uniformed spelling in the south after the revolution.

1779 old 96th District South Carolina. Petter Tutten -Totten Andrew Miller John Porterfield.

Andrew Miller and other Millers of Augusa remove to 96th SC. Therefore Benjamin Totten raised by the Millers or Tuttens in SC. Andrew Miller is listed revolution period in Wahington Co Virginia.

Petter Tutten possible Uncle or relative of John Tuton-Totten live alongside Andrew Miller. Perhaps cared for William Tuton John Tuton Several girls who all by 1774 are mostley spelling thier name Totten. Petter Totten well noted Presbyterian leader of SC Abbeville Longcrane Church.

John Porterfield bought the land of George Teater Sr in Washington Co Virginia. John Porterfield lives alongside Andrew Miller and Petter Totten old 96th South Carolina. His wife Ester married George Teater Sr after 1802. 1782 At this time Benjamin Totten has left his real family in Montgomery Co to come and stay at the place where George Teater Sr land is.

Note following year. John Portereild comes from the 96th SC and enters Deed transaction with George Teater Sr to purchase x acres on Bakers Creek. This all happens while Benjamin Totten is in George Teater land area on the Middle fork of the Holston. Note Benajmin Totten s former Gaurdian was Andrew Miller who lived alongsdie John Portefield an Petter Totten previuosly in the old 96th SC.

Why would Benajmin Totten leave his true family to sit at where George Teater owned property while George Teater was away at Clarks Station in kentucky.? And why? would John Poterifeld choose George Teaters land to buy after coming all the way from the old 96th SC

Note show the folllowing year Robert Pearis the half brother of George Teater wife Sarah ,Benjamin Totten John Totten all migrate to Greene Co TN..

Can all this be a coincedence. ? Hardley not.

    EXPALNATION OF EVENTS.

Notes show George Teater Sr and his son Samuel were plauged with Indian trouble at Clarks station and near areas. George Teater may have wrote a letter to Capt George Pearis or his brother Robert Pearis requesting them to look into hi wife Sarah and childen saftey at Bakers Creek. Before Benjamin arrived in Montgomery Co his brother John Totten was already there and knew and fought with George Teater and George Pearis. Benjamin Totten had only one Tithe 1782. It appears Robert Pearis brought Benjamin Totten to George Teater place during those dngerous times. Benajmin Totten contacted John Portefield to help George Teater sell out. John Porterfield did indeed buy George Teater land. By 1784 1785 George Teater took the rest of hi family to join him and Samuel in Kentucky. By 1783 Benjamin Totten and brother John Totten moved with the half brother of Sarah Pearis -Robert Pearis to Greene Tn..

1799 Grainger TN tax list Benjamin Totten. Benjamin and wife Ester settled in Melungeon country a short time.

1802 Benjamin Totten recieves a letter payment from Gov Sevier. 1802 Benjamin Totten is listed as Capt Benjamin Totton Jackson Tenn. There 2 other people here at this time of note. One is Jonas Griffith the father of Samuel Griffith who married Sarah Teater a daughter of George Teater Sr and Sarah Pearis. Another is Benjamin Lockhart a former Washington Co resident who wrote letters to the Totten as cousins.

1792 Robert Pearis arrives in Madison Kentucky with the following people. Rhoda Parris his half Indian sister. By war of 1812 Garrard Kentucky the names John Gonzalva, Juan Gonzalza, Fatima Zulima, Esmaeralda Buena Almeera begin in Parris Teater and Joseph H Tottens children with a high degree of frequency for several genarations. It goes back somewhere to John Tuton of the Northern Neck and the Gonzalzas a Spanish family. These names seemed to be important family names, because they were kept for 3 Generations.

lastly after 1802 to 1813 George Teater Sr married his 3rd wife also named Ester. This a fact and fully proven by the Totten POA registered in the deeds of Overton Tenn and proved and registered in the court of Garrard Co Kentucky, And all this done as George Teater Sr-- not John George.

The history of George Teater Sr of Washington Co Virg and Garrard Kentucky cannot be written without Benjamin Totten Sr why? 1st of all George Teater son Parris Teater married Benjamin Tottens daughter Rebecca Totten.
