SUSAN WAS FIRST MARRIED TO A BROTHER OF JOSEPH, ABISHA DOWNING SR. ABISHA DIED AT AGE 24.

The deaths of two aged and respected citizens of this city occurred on Wednesday, March 6th; they being Mrs Julia Schooler, mother of Mrs. A.H. Dean and Mrs. Susan Downing, mother of Major O. Perry and Mrs. Senator Gregg. Mrs. Schooler was a native of Bavaria, Germany, and was about 75 years.

Mrs. Susan Downing was one of the oldest citizens of the county. She was born in Vinton County in 1817 but spent the greater part of her life here. She was the mother of nine children, six of whom survive.


Full Obit: Susan Dougherty Downing, daughter of Thomas Dougherty, was born November 17, 1817 at McArthur, Vinton County, Ohio. She came to Pike County from Jackson early in the thirties, and was married to Abisha Downing in 1834. Abisha Downing, her husband, died in 1837, leaving two children, Issac E. and Abisha.

In 1843 she married Joseph Downing, a brother of her former husband, who had two children by a former marriage, Oliver F. and Emily.

From this union were born 7 children

a family of eleven children who were all trained and raised to manhood and womanhood by this mother. Three of her children are dead, James, Gertrude and Issac E. She leaves 6 children, 23 grandchildren,and 32 great grandchildren. She leaves a brother, James Dougherty of Peoria, Illinois, two years older, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Redd of Nashville, Tenn., two years younger than herself.
