Sempill's House in Semple's Close, Castlehill for NT2573

The Edinburgh town house of the Sempills of Renfrewshire. It displays the date 1638. One of its former inhabitants was Hugh, 11th Lord Sempill who commanded the left flank of the Royal Army at Culloden in 1746. It probably owes its survival to the fact that it was used in the Victorian period as a kitchen for the adjacent Free Church of Scotland's Assembly Hall.

Note: Occupied by Grissel, Lady Semple, widow of Francis, 8th Lord Semple, prior to 1734, when it was acquired by Hugh, 11th Lord Semple.
