1. The base map comes from OpenStreetMap. The airport and roads have been removed, the latter as they were laid out in the 1800s.
2. The "tuns" shown in larger run text and their associated "towmales" in smaller red text are taken from a lease dated 1641, quoted here.
3. The farms names in purple are taken from "Orkney Poll Taxes in the 1690s", by James Irvine.
4. The location of these farms has been determined from the detailed map of the island produced by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland here
5. The remaining names in grey show additional farms that are shown in the 1851 census of the Island. These can be seen on the FreeCEN website here (press "find").
