Article Text

WOMAN TAKEN FROM TRAIN HERE DIES OF ANGINA PECTORIS
Mrs. George Smith Patton of Los Angeles, California, was taken from a train here Saturday night suffering from an attack of angina pectoris, and died a few minutes later. She was on route east from the west Coast to Washington, D.C., to visit her brother. Major George Smith Patton, U.S. Army.
She was accompanied by a sister, Mrs. Annie Wilson Patton of San Marino, California. The body, prepared by Strong'a Mortuary will be shipped this morning to San Marino California, for burial.

Commentary

Article is completely confusing the way it is worded. Not certain if the reporter was confused or whether the way it was written is confusing to the reader. First of all, "Mrs. George Smith Patton" is Ruth Wilson. The object of the word her in "her brother" in the first paragraph is actually the sister mentioned in the following paragraph, which then refers to Annie's brother, George Patton, rather than the senior George Patton (who had died the year prior). In the sentence, "She was accompanied by a sister..." the "She" is Ruth Wilson, but "a sister" refers to Annie, the sister of Major George S. Patton III. The use of "Mrs." in referring to Annie was incorrect and doubly misused or misplaced, because Annie was unmarried, and if married, the use of "Mrs." would have been traditionally used with the husband's formal name (as in the start of the article referring to Ruth's formal name).
