This image shows the trunk of an American Chesnut Tree, felled "decades ago" by the Chestnut Blight. This photograph attests to the restiance of the Chestnut to decay. A relatively weak wood, it could not be effectively used for load bearing structures. This is is why it was used for things like fence posts and door sills, where it wasn't required to bear weight, because of its long term endurance would not have to be replaced quickly.
