__________________________ [edit] SourceThe Land Warrant records of the PA Archives were searched for warrants issued to persons with the last name of "Houston". Included in this data set are entries for both Huston, Houston, McCuiston and McQuiston. Other variations, such as Houghston, Howstone and Hewston, etc., were not encountered. [edit] DataLand Warrants have been located in two counties within the boundaries of "Old Chester", whose records show that land warrants were issued to persons bearing the Houston surname prior to 1776. Other counties in Old Chester were checked, but lacked warrant records for "Houston" prior to 1776. Warrants may have been taken out for land now within these county boundaries, but they would be listed under the counties above. This does not mean that Houston's were not necessarily present or acquire land in these areas prior to the Revolution: only that they did not obtain the initial land warrant for such land. They may, for example, have obtained land for which someone who had previously taken out a warrant. Such lands may be listed under "patents" under the Houston surname, but so far only the records of warrant holders have been examined.
Not also that Houston's may have obtained warrants for land prior to the Revolution, in areas now within the States of Maryland and Delaware. These areas are not covered in the PA Archives records, and have not as yet been examined. |
