There are two known independent Houston lineages in Old Augusta
- General Sam Houston Lineage. This line is named after its most well recognized members, General Sam Houston of Texas. General Houston's line traces their descent to Person:John Houston (15) who came to Augusta County about 1740. Nineteenth Century family Historian, the Rev. Samuel Rutherford Houston, cited papers of his father indicating that John had come from Ireland about 1735, and settled first in Pennsylvania. While there is reason to believe this is so, or close to being so, direct confirmation of the immigration from Ireland is lacking. In any case, John had a number of sons who married, and had children in Old Augusta. Most of the Houston's in Old Augusta seem to trace to him as the family patriarch.
