Family talk:Thomas Gilbert and Jane Rossiter (1)

Jane's name

The Taunton records evidently indicate that Thomas m. Jane Rossiter. Great Migration accepts the research of Meredith Colket, [1] which indicates that Jane is the daughter of Edward Rossiter, born about 1614 and came with him to the colonies on the Mary and John in 1630. She had a sister Joane who married Nicholas Hart, so her name was Jane, not Joan. There was speculation, however, by Geoffrey Gilbert in 1957, that Jane was really Joan Combe, Thomas's step-sister, and widow of Hugh Rossiter. [2]

As cited on Jane's page, Anderson says there was no evidence that there was a Jane Bassett, that Thomas Gilbert m. Jane Rossiter and suggests the original author of this myth misread the name and created a figment of a person based on that misreading.. The marriage date and both birth dates on this page are "about", presumably because they were all adjusted to fit Jane in the family of William Bassett even though the marriage was actually recorded as 1639. The only concrete date that could possibly be verified to see if this is somebody else is Jane's death 22 Jan 1711 in Plymouth. Fortunately Plymouth VRs are online and searchable, and there is no death record on 22 Jan 1711 (whether 1710/11, plain 1711, or 1711/12) and none for Jane, or Mrs. Gilbert in the period 1710-1712. There is apparently a death recorded in Taunton in 1691 for Jane Gilbert in Taunton "mother of Thomas" which seems pretty definite. Thomas Gilbert Jr. did not marry a Jane (Ann Blake), but being born in 1643 he would not fit this page anyway. So I can find nothing to support the dates on this page, I cannot identify the Thomas Gilbert or Jane Bassett other than as Anderson suggested, and so conclude this is simply a genealogical myth entered into IGI (the cited source) and am merging this into Thomas Gilbert and Jane Rossiter. --Jrich 09:33, 17 May 2012 (EDT)

Removed the nomerge. Colket's 1984 article in NEHGR supersedes the Gilbert speculation of 1957 and identifies the wife of Hugh Rossiter as Dorothy Combe, widow of William Norris of Salem. Hugh was buried at Combe St. Nicholas in 1680 and Dorothy was buried there in 1697.--jaques1724 04:48, 10 June 2012 (EDT)
