Family talk:Andrew Kendall and Hannah Jennings (1)

Is Hannah Jennings d. of Benjamin & Elisabeth really Andrew Kendall's wife? [25 October 2011]

The death record in the Brookfield VRs suggests that Hannah, d. of Benjamin Jennings and Elisabeth Gilbert, died unmarried, calling into question the (common) assumption that she is the "Hannah Jennings of Orange" who married Andrew Kendall in Royalston in 1796. Further evidence against this is Andrew's 1828 will, in which his wife Hannah was still living. Bruce Kendall 13:46, 23 October 2011 (EDT)

Yes, I think you've made a good case. She should probably be removed from this Family page. Don't know who the real wife is, though. Have you uncovered any clues? --Jrich 17:14, 23 October 2011 (EDT)
P.S. 1850 Census in Middlesex, Washington, Vermont, household of Lyman Kendall, age 40, contains Hannah Kendall, age 73. Suggests birth about 1777. --Jrich 17:27, 23 October 2011 (EDT)
I actually only "discovered" this anomaly when I was adding Hannah's death record on this site. I've had the will and death record for years, just never made the connection! I think that your discovery on the census record is pretty strong evidence. It looks like the Orange VRs are only available on FHL microfilm, and maybe from NEHGR. I'm not actively doing genealogical research at the moment, and have let my subscriptions lapse - do you have easy access to either of these? Bruce Kendall 18:39, 25 October 2011 (EDT)
I don't think the Orange VRs have been published so probably getting the film at the nearest FHL is going to be the only way to see these? NEHGS doesn't seem to have them anyway, nor ma-vitalrecords.org or other places I have looked. familysearch indexing does have a database of Vermont Vital Records. Many of these were reconstructed by town clerks due to a 1919 law, built from cemetery records trying to build more complete records, and it has Hannah Kendall. She d. 8 Sep 1851 in Montpelier, age 74/7/17 which gives a birth date of 22 Jan 1777 according to my calculation, and it gives the name of husband as "Andrew Kendall Esq." so proof seems pretty complete as far as ruling out 1811 as the death date, and hence the commonly attributed parents and birth date. view here --Jrich 21:30, 25 October 2011 (EDT)
