When they marry in Reading in 1840 William gives his place of residence as Southampton. Their son William is born in Southampton, then a daughter Elizabeth is born in Norton in 1843 near Hillmorton, where William was born. Shortly after this they move to Poplar, London, where their son dies in 1844. Their second daughter is born in 1846.

In the 1871 census William and Mary are living at 99 Ship St, next to their eldest daughter Elizabeth and son in law Robert Judkins at 100 Ship St.

Elizabeth, their oldest surviving child, goes straight from home into marriage, but at least three of their younger daughters go into service. Kate, their youngest duaghter, trains at Guy’s hospital as a nurse and has a notable career, serving in WW1 and then working in South Africa.

In the 1881 census, after William has died Mary is living with her daughter Elizabeth and son in law Robert Judkins at 189 Manchester Rd, and is listed as "Being in Receipt of Parish Relief".
