The McCollum Family of Augusta County, VA

John and Patrick McCollum (sometimes spelled McCollom) appear to be contemporaries, and possibly siblings, that migrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Augusta County, Virginia most likely in the 1750's.

Patrick McCollum's records in Augusta County begin in 1750 when he purchased 205 acres "on Christian's Creek", from James Coyle, on 11 October 1750, and again purchased 350 acres of land on "Burden's Creek" of the James River in 1763, from Sampson and Mary Matthews. He sold some of his land in 1767, probably about the same time he may have moved to North Carolina, according to some sources. Records of Patrick's wife and children have not been located, but additional information on his family would be welcomed.

John McCollum's records in Augusta County begin in 1764 when he purchased 119 acres of land "in Forks of James, on Buffalo Creek" from John Mitchell on 16 March 1764. His birthdate is estimated as "abt. 1705" on familysearch, but there are no records cited for that estimation. John McCollum married Anne Davidson, daughter of William and Elizabeth Davidson abt. 1730, according to some sources.

John McCollum, Jr., married Elizabeth McDowell, daughter of Ephraim McDowell sometime around abt. 1754. He appears to have died just a few years later by about 1757 or so, when Elizabeth McDowell married David Ayers (although records of their first child on familysearch do not begin until 1771). Although there are no apparent records of any will or estate records of this John McCollum, Jr. in Augusta County, there is an ominous a record of a "John McCully, at South Branch, killed" by Indians in April of 1758, listed in a list of those killed or captured in a list of Indian Attacks of 1755-1758 in Augusta County, VA, which appears to indicate that John McCollum, Jr, was most likely killed in one of the many Indian attacks during that time period.

Records in Augusta County of John McCollum, Sr. end in 1767, when it appears that he may have also relocated perhaps to Rowan County, North Carolina, according to some sources. Records in 1779 of James, Duncan, Jonathan and Isaac McCollum indicate that they all were in Captain Hind's' militia company in Randolph County, NC as neighbors of the Vickery, Nations, and Robbins families who moved to Pendleton District and later to Blount and nearby counties in Alabama, according to a post on Ancestry.com.

The same post claims that "John McCollum, born 1767, stated in Blount County, Ala, 4 Feb 1833, when Jeremiah Files applied for a Revolutionary pension (S-13025), thet he served with Files in the Revolution in 1784 and again in 1787 Under Captain James Hamilton at a garrison on Tugaloo River near Walton's Ford in Pendleton. Samuel McCollom purchased land on the north side of Seneca River 2 September 1787 with John Files as witness. In 1790 John, Jonathan and two Samuel McColloms were living near the Files family and Daniel McCollum also was enumerated. The family appear in a number of deeds in ensuing years and on 17 February 1816, David McCollum sold land on Town Creek of Twelve-Mile Creek to John Stanley. John McCollom, the comrade of Jeremiah files, was a Justice of the Peace in St. Clair County, Ala 20 Nov 1818, and the family later was in Blount and Walker Counties, Ala."
