The Virginia Rockholds changed their name to Rockwell following Thomas Tolbert's generation. Thomas Tolbert Rockhold/Rockholt moved from Maryland to Morgan County, Virginia, possibly in the wake of the War of 1812. Curiously, he did not take his 8 children, but had two younger children, a boy and a girl, and a 26-45 year old woman in his family in Virginia (1820 Morgan Co., VA Census). This boy may have been John J. Rockwell, born ca. 1812, son of Thomas Tolbert Rockwell, Jr. John was adopted by one set of his grandparents, which set is not specified in letter. Image Gallery
