Essential Question: In the 1910 federal census Lillian Pattison is listed as being the mother of 4 children with only 1 surviving (that would be Paul M. Pattison). The others were probably stillborn or toddlers when they died. In the 1920 federal census the Pattisons have a 13 year old "step daughter" named Anna M Pattison living with them. One wonders if this is more likely a foster care or adoption situation as neither of the principals was married before. By the 1930 federal census Anna M is no longer living in the household; she would be about 23 if still alive. According to Lillian Pattison's obituary there is no other child mentioned aside from Paul. Therefore, the essential question is - who was Anna M?
