Marriage & Children

In Thomas, Sr. 1654 will, he names wife Phebe, and children: John, Thomas, Stephen, Mary and Martha. Holman (Pillsbury Ancestry 1:255-258) provides the same list.

Thomas' will provides a curious statement, "Also I Pheaby latly wife to thomas dow doe ioyne ||my|| consent to this wil of my husband." "Pheaby latly wife" has been interpreted to indicate the maiden name of Thomas' wife. Another interpretation and perhaps more probable, it can be read "Phebe lately wife." Holman does not address this phrasing. In court proceedings concerning the apprenticeship/custody of son Steven, one statement reads "Phebe Dow, the mother of the boy, testified that ..." This phrase may be meaningless or it may redefine our understanding of the family of Thomas Dow.
