Thomas (m2) Ann Lafferty Stewart and son William Posted by: Vickie Peterson (ID *****5847) Date: March 01, 2004 at 14:16:15

I know there are soooo many Armstrongs in Augusta Co., VA., that it is hard to keep them straight - I am trying to find a connection between Thomas Armstrong who m2) Mary Ann Lafferty (Stewart), widow of James Stewart (killed by Indians in 1757). He already had a son, William Armstrong, by his first wife. I am wondering if his son William was the William who married Elizabeth Erwin, d/o Jared Erwin. I have seen many postings regarding his son, William, JR., marrying Catherine Friel. This is what I know - William Armstrong who married Elizabeth Erwin, in Augusta Co., VA., 1788, was thought to be a brother to John Armstrong, who was thought to marry Agness Erwin (also a d/o Jared Erwin); however, I am beginning to wonder if he did not marry Polly (Mary) Crawford, as no record of a marriage for John and Agness exists; however, there is one for John and Polly (1790, Augusta Co., VA). The William Armstrong, Jr., who married Catherine Friel married in 1793; so he was contemporaneous with my William Armstrong (marrying within a 5 years of each other). So, I guess what I am looking for is the proof that the William who married Catherine was indeed the son of William who was the son of Thomas. Or, in the lack of direct evidence, has anyone found any documents which link the Thomas who married Ann Lafferty Stewart to the William who married Elizabeth Erwin. Does anyone have a source or sources which link all three generations? I am not looking for circumstantial evidence - I have more than enough of that in the way of the Chronicles of the Scotch Irish in Virginia. Does anyone have or know of a primary source that helps clear this mess up ?

May 21, 1747 Thomas purchased 400 acres of land on the Jennings Branch of Cathey's River (now known as the Middle River) for 20 lbs. and 5 shillings from James Bell.

In 1749 Thomas received 120 additional acres of land on the Jennings Branch.

On March 17, 1753 Thomas qualifies as "Ensign of Foote." On 20th November, 1755, Thomas qualifies as "Captain of Foote." On 27 July, 1756, a Council of War was held in Augusta Courthouse to consider the most proper places to build forts along the frontier for the protection of the inhabitants. The men present were Col. John Buchanan, Col. David Stewart, Major John Brown, Captains Joseph Cueton, Robert Scott, Patrick Martin, William Christian, Samuel Stalnicker and Thomas Armstrong.

Augusta County, Virginia Will Bk. #5, pp. 422 to 424 contains the Will of Thomas Armstrong: This Will dated 29, April, 1776 was proven 20th of August, 1776 and is quoted partially as follows: "Item, I give to my well beloved wife Ann a third of all my land during her lifetime, likewise a third of all of my moveable estate, a bed and bedding, saddle and spinning wheel and her body clothes; Item, to my son William two Hundred acres leased to him previously with the order that William give to Sarah Rutledge seven pounds or a horse of equal value; Item, to son Abel the Plantation wheron the dwelling house stands, likewise the new survey on the north side of Gennings Branch, a horse, saddle and my body clothes and the remainder of all my moveable estate;" (Able was to let William have any timber he might need.... Evidently Williams land was not forested as was the Home Plantation land.) "Item, to well beloved son and daugher Robert and Jane McKitrick five shillings English money; Item, to well beloved son and daughter Edward and Sarah Rutledge five shillings English money; Item, to my well beloved son and daughter Henry and Rosanna Murray five shillings English money." He appoints his son William and his wife as Executors, and signs with his mark. Signing as witness were James Trimble, Robert Armstrong and John Beard. Robert Armstrong listed as a witmess may be a brother to Thomas. Robert obtained land on the Jennings Branch in 1752.
