Spencer and Jane were married about 1874 probably in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. A couple of years later, with their infant son Spencer, they moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where their next child, a daughter Elizabeth, was born. Spencer worked in banking for the year or so they resided in Des Moines and then the young family moved to Buffalo, Erie County, New York, where Spencer, following in his family's footsteps, opened a linseed oil business. Here they remained and had five more children.
